Job description

Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. Fort Knox celebrated its 25-year anniversary in 2021, and has produced over 8.5 million ounces since it began operation. In 2020, Kinross acquired Manh Choh – a project expected to commence production in 2024 and process ore at Fort Knox.

Fort Knox prioritizes being a strong contributor to the State and local communities, and since 2001, has helped support more than 300 community partners and has contributed more than US$25 million to the Alaska Mental Health Trust.

Job Description

Responsible for coordinating geology functions at the mine site related to ore control and mineral modeling. Manage the implementation of all new programs in mine geology area.

Job Responsibilities

1.    Responsible for all ore control activities.
2.    Assist in the screening and hiring of staff and field personnel for the Technical Services department.
3.    Responsible for operations personnel training to guide mining and minimize dilution.
4.    Development of site ore and waste characterization and pit mapping.
5.    Development and preparation of monthly reconciliation and reporting.
6.    Support the Chief GeoTech Engineer in slope stability monitoring and hazard identification.
7.    Supervise the Geology Team
8.    Responsible for monthly royalty calculation.
9.    Ensure that geological information is kept updated in a timely and efficient manner and adjust models accordingly.
10.    Responsible for accurate reserve and resource reporting.
11.    Maintain accurate records and files.
12.    Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in job performance.
13.    Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, recommending promotions, and carrying out corrective actions as needed.
14.    Investigate, analyze and supervise the documentation of accidents, injuries and equipment damage, and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.
15.    Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
16.    Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
17.    Compliance with all company policies and procedures, including, but not limited to safety, confidentiality and environmental policies.
18.    Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
19.    Work safely in all areas, identify potential safety hazards, and work with management to correct them.
20.    Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
21.    Perform other duties as required.

Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor of Science in geology or related field is required. A Master's degree in geology or related field is preferred.
  2. A minimum of ten years’ experience as a mine or exploration geologist is required.
  3. A minimum of five years’ experience with drilling programs is preferred.

Skills

  1. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
  2. Must have a strong commitment to safety in the work environment.
  3. A thorough understanding of the efficient use of geologic instruments, techniques, and interpretation of data.
  4. Good working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs. MineSight, Leapfrog and Vulcanskills are preferred, as well as various database programs (e.g. Acquire).
  5. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  6. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  7. Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  8. Must stand as the mine QP for Resource.
  9. Must be available for shift work, holidays, and weekends.
