POSITION SUMMARY
The City of Grandview is looking for a summer intern to assist the Planning Division of Community Development and Public Works. In a community of nearly 30,000 residents, departments often work collaboratively on both public and private projects. The professional environment gives students an opportunity to become more familiar with the functions, responsibilities and relationships between city departments. The intern will receive first-hand experience in municipal government operations as it pertains to policy, regulation, technical training, and customer service. In general, this position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week during the summer months, with general office hours of 8am-5pm, and some flexibility in how these hours are set up depending on the student's other commitments. Work will take place on-site based out of Grandview City Hall.
Job Responsibilities (include, But not limited to)
- Assist with the City’s public improvement projects funded through the 2023 GO Bonds
- Data collection, entry and visualization utilizing ARC GIS
- Assist with planning related tasks for the 2023 Planning Sustainable Places Grant project on Harry Truman Drive and the Presidential Trail corridor
- Assist in developing project cost estimates, schedules, and justifications
- Respond to citizen inquiries over the phone, email or in-person
- Assist with meetings of the Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment and Citizens Advisory Board on Transportation
- Occasional field inspections with staff from the Community Development and Public Works departments
- Exposure to civil plan review
- Assist with preparation of grants, APWA accreditation documents, and permit documents related to ROW, etc.
- Attend Pre-Application Meetings with property/business owners, builders, developers and City staff
- Other duties as assigned by the Senior Planner or Public Works Director
Minimum Qualifications
- Student must be enrolled in an accredited planning or civil engineering program with a goal of receiving a bachelors or master’s degree
- Student must have completed at least one (1) year of course work in the program
- Must successfully pass a background check
- Preferred - Junior or Senior currently enrolled in an ABET accredited university with a path towards graduating with a B.S. in Civil Engineering or Planning
Physical Demands / Work Environment
- Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicle, computer terminal, calculator, telephone, photocopier, fax machine, blue print machine, engineer’s scale, drafting instruments, and/or materials used in performing essential functions
- Requires the ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill, such as typing
- Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing five to ten pounds. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation
- Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks is performed primarily in an office setting subject to frequent interruptions and site visits to various City and community facilities and active construction project sites often in inclement weather, with muddy or icy conditions. May be exposed to highly stressful situations and individuals who are irate or hostile.
PAY
$16.50 hourly with 40 hours a week schedule.
