Job description
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( LBNL ) Facilities Division has an opening for a Truck Driver to join the team.
In this role, you will perform on and off-site pickups and delivery of material, goods, and equipment (Light Duty). Customers include, but are not limited to, all Laboratory divisions, DOE facilities, and UC Berkeley Campus, and could include other off-site locations around the Bay Area (e.g., UCOP, LLNL, JCAP, JBEI, Potter Street, and the Richmond Warehouse). Specialized equipment utilized includes forklifts. Vehicles utilized for deliveries include medium- sized package vans and liftgate trucks.The incumbent is required to practice a strong commitment to safety and possess a DOT Hazmat certification. A minimum of a Class "B" license is required with HAZMAT and airbrake endorsements.
What You Will Do:
Point to Point Transport 60%
* Sort, stage, and distribute all packages received/processed by Central Receiving (FedEx, UPS, and Priority Carriers). Packages include but are not limited to: refrigerated items, sensitive property, office supplies, packages, cartons, mail, electronic components, and instruments.
* Perform specialized medium and heavy-duty hauling of large items, including lumber, steel, sequences, magnets, transformers, machinery, scientific equipment, and high-value material. Vehicles utilized include package vans, forklifts, lift gates, flatbed trucks, and other specialized material handling equipment. The incumbent will only drive vehicles that they are licensed to operate and will be the passenger for larger deliveries.
* Ensure that all material is stabilized and secured properly in vans and trucks.
* Exhibit awareness and demonstrate a high level of expertise when staging, loading, off-loading, strapping, and securing material.
* Perform pickups and delivery at designated locations, including on and off-site locations (e.g., LLNL, JBEI, Potter Street, Richmond Warehouse, and other Bay Area locations).
* Evaluate road conditions and make necessary adjustments to ensure personnel, cargo, and equipment are safe when operating the vehicle.
* Demonstrate safe driving and material handling practices and procedures.
* Comply with Federal DOT, State, and Lab policies and regulations governing driving vehicles, including compliance with the Lab's Workplace Substance Abuse Program. For DOT-acceptable physical exam providers, refer to the FMCSA website:
* Comply with LBNL and Facilities policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
Documentation and Control 20%
* Ensure that packages and/or material barcodes are scanned at pickup and delivery points, using the I-Box hand-held computer, to ensure that packages are correctly delivered to addressees.
* Ensure that the addressee on the I-Box hand- held computer signs for all items categorized as "sensitive or controlled property."
* Record employee badge number in the note field for tracking the delivery process.
* Ensure that required document(s) i.e., Hazmat Shipping papers, DOE Property Tags, Shipping Documents, Warehouse Storage tags) accompany material while being transported to its appropriate delivery point.
* Ensure all hazardous material for pick up and deliveries must be manifested and documented per DOT 49CFR regulations.
Vehicle Maintenance and Safety 10%
* Inspect vehicle and complete daily vehicle inspection report. (Special attention should be placed on lift-gates, tie downs, tires, and brakes.)
* Report vehicle defects, damage, or maintenance needs to supervisor or lead immediately.
* Clean windows and mirrors as needed.
* Sweep out package vans, lift-gate, or trailers on a regular basis.
* Ensure that all communication devices (phones and radios) are maintained in good operating condition.
* Keep the dock area well organized and free of tripping hazards.
* Complete LBNL online Accident Report, in the event of an accident.
Miscellaneous 10%
* Follow Lab and EHS safety guidelines
* Report any abnormal occurrences, road hazards, building changes, customer complaints, accidents, damage, or loss of material to supervisor or lead immediately.
* Report any work-related injuries immediately to your supervisor/manager and follow procedures.
* Keep all assigned training up-to-date.
What is Required:
* Possess a Class B California Commercial Driver's license, with hazmat and airbrake endorsements, DOT certification training and current medical card.
* Equivalent to one year of paid or regularly assigned driving experience in a job involving operating of medium-size trucks.
* Ability to comply with and maintain compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
* Knowledge of applicable State and Federal vehicle codes and transport laws governing the vehicle operated, load carried, and driver responsibilities.
* Demonstrated knowledge of the rules of safe driving and the provisions of the State of California Vehicle Code pertaining to operation of vehicles described in the appropriate class (a 2-axle vehicle).
* Demonstrated experience and ability to operate medium size package vans, liftgate trucks (2-axle vehicles), and forklifts (5 tons maximum weight capacity) and obtain forklift operator certification upon hire.
* Ability to walk, lift (up to 50lb), carry, push, and pull; climb, stoop, and crouch; reach, handle, and use fingers; speak, hear and see.
* Ability to load and unload materials of varying types and sizes utilizing a forklift (if necessary) having a carrying capacity of up to five tons.
* Demonstrated ability to operate specified vehicles in unusual traffic conditions, including hilly terrain, narrow roadways, backing, etc.
* Demonstrated experience with cargo handling and documentation procedures.
* Expertise in all areas of equipment tie down and proper weight distribution.
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in pre-trip preparation and vehicle inspection procedures.
* Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently or in teams on assignments, develop own work methods and procedures, use initiative and judgment, and make decisions within scope of work.
* Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and willingness to work in a flexible, changing work environment.
* Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with team members and customers and to function well in a team environment.
* Able to follow processes, procedures, and policies.
Desired Qualifications:
* Basic knowledge of computers.
* May be required to possess a "Q" Clearance for handling classified documents and access to DOE and LLNL.
* Familiarity with all LBNL onsite and remote delivery locations, DOT safety standards, Property Management system, iBox Barcode System, and tying down equipment loads.
Notes:
* This is a full-time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
* This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
* Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements step rates.
* The full hourly range for this position is $25.46 - $37.82/hourly for the job classification of 745.1. Salary for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate's qualifications, relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).

* This position has been designated as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) as governed under the Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of Drug & Alcohol Policy & Compliance and is subject to Berkeley Lab's Workplace Substance Abuse Policy and testing requirements. The successful candidate must comply with the pre-employment requirements, including providing consent for former DOT employers to share candidates' past three years' test results.
* Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA, and will include driving to remote LBNL locations.
