JOB PURPOSE:

Stanford University, recognized as one of the most prestigious and innovative academic institutions in the world, has an immediate opening for a Director in the First Generation and/or Low-Income (FLI) Student Success Center. The FLI Student Success Center (FLISSC) is proud to be part of the Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership within the division of Student Affairs. The Centers consist of the Asian American Activities Center, Black Community Services Center, El Centro Chicano y Latino, First Generation and/or Low-Income Student Success Center, Markaz Community Resources Center, Native American Cultural Center, Queer Student Resources Center, and Women's Community Center. Each Center works to advance learning and student development through five pillars – Academic and Intellectual Engagement, Leadership Development, Mental Health & Well-Being, Community Building, and Alumni Engagement.

 
The Student Affairs Division, with students as our focus, engages with a range of constituents including faculty, staff, parents, alumni, as well as other groups in the external community. The Director of FLI plays a critical role in cultivating an inclusive and welcoming campus community with particular attention to the needs and concerns of first-generation and low-income students. The Director provides strategy, vision and direction, manages the office’s programs and operations, as well as supervises staff and students who assist with the development and implementation of the department's services, programs and events.

The Director will ensure that first generation and low-income student programs at Stanford is viewed as a national model for creating a campus environment that is inclusive and supportive of diversity with particular attention to first-generation and low- income student issues. The Director provides this leadership with attention to emerging first-generation and low-income issues and continual review of best practices in student services on college campuses. The Director serves as a visible resource and advocate for the entire Stanford community regarding these issues, working in close partnership with other academic departments and offices within Student Affairs. In addition, the Director will represent the office and Stanford University on internal committees and at external conferences.

CORE DUTIES:

Administrative Management

Develop and sustain the strategic mission of FLI by aligning goals and objectives in relation to the mission of the Division and University; in particular, aligning goals and objectives with Student Affairs “Our Most Important Work”.

Establish and cultivate strong relationships with academic departments; alumni relations; and other units, to build upon successful collaborative programs and initiatives, identify new synergies, and support student engagement and success.

Ensure the timely delivery of projects, programs, and services that cultivate first- generation and low-income student learning and success.

Monitor, analyze, and evaluate current scope of services and programs; plan, implement and direct new programs under the supervision of the Assistant Vice Provost and in coordination with other partners within Student Affairs.

Manage and develop staff of 2 professionals and a number of students and interns.


Strategic Planning and Financial Management

Provides strategic visioning and leadership in developing, launching and sustaining resources and services around first-generation and low-income student success.

Provides leadership with attention to emerging first-generation student issues and best practices in student support services.

Short and long-range planning; programming development, and implementation.

Assessment, data collection, and data analysis.

Fiscal responsibility for FLI budget, including identifying additional funding sources


Leadership

Serves as a visible resource and advocate for the entire Stanford community regarding issues of first-generation and low-income student success and timely graduation.

Act as a thought leader and initiate and provide direction in navigating successfully in Stanford’s highly decentralized and matrixed organizational structure.

Encourage innovation and thinking “outside-the-box”.

Participate, attend and present at National, Regional and local professional associations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience with increasing complexity and leadership responsibilities, or combination of education and relevant experience;

Demonstrated strong leadership and strategic management skills and ability to work and lead people;

Significant budget management experience and strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information;

Outstanding public speaking and presentation skills to communicate at all levels with tact and diplomacy and effectively articulate the place and role of FLI programs in advancing inclusion, community and integrative learning at Stanford University;

Ability to engage faculty and steward a highly sophisticated alumni population;

A record of success in developing strategic partnerships, collaborating with academic units, and achieving high satisfaction levels in meeting the needs of students;

Experience in data collection and data analysis, as well as demonstrating competency in assessment and evaluation of student service activities in an educational setting to improve services to students:

Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators, etc.) with diplomacy and tact;

Expressed sensitivity to and demonstrated understanding of the needs of a diverse student body;

Strong knowledge of current and emerging practices in student success initiatives, particularly relating to first generation and low-income students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Completion of an advanced degree in an academic area;

A minimum of eight years of experience serving in full-time professional leadership positions in higher education student affairs programs within a large, complex, decentralized university setting;

Experience in higher education setting;

Demonstrated success in obtaining external funding and cultivating strong donor relations;

Familiarity with multi-cultural and multi-ethnic dynamics of the academic and social pressures encountered by students at a renowned research university.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a hybrid position requiring at least 3 days of onsite work per week and more as needed to meet student and departmental needs.

Able to work on evenings and weekends, as needed.

The expected pay range for this position is $121,000 - $140,000 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
