Overall Responsibility:
As a Medical Coding Specialist, you will play a crucial role in accurately coding professional services within our pain management practice. Responsibilities include reviewing medical record documentation, assigning precise diagnosis and procedure codes for services provided by physicians and other healthcare professionals, and conducting analyses to ensure record completeness.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
Provide accurate CPT and ICD-10 codes for professional services, emphasizing Evaluation and Management encounters and pain management procedures.
Support providers with coding updates, changes, and educational initiatives.
Assist billing office staff promptly with coding-related denials, questions, and education.
Conduct coding analysis, perform audits of patient charts, and communicate results and education to providers.
Analyze hospital medical records for physician deficiencies, enter/remove deficiencies in EMR, and maintain confidentiality.
Review transcribed documents for clinic and hospital encounters, ensuring accuracy and updating deficiency lists.
Assist in appropriately assigning codes for inpatient, outpatient, and pain management procedures for hospital encounters as needed.
Stay updated on current state and federal coding guidelines and maintain required credentials.
Licensure and Certification:
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or
Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P)
Required Skills, Education, and/or Experience:
Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
Two years of professional E&M coding experience required; pain management and coding experience preferred.
Knowledgeable about insurance payors.
Ability to prioritize, work independently, and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing).
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
Proficient in using 3M coding software and electronic health record systems.
Remote work potential for experienced coders, with occasional onsite work in Wichita, KS.
