JOB SUMMARY

Disability Resources is the unit in the university responsible for coordinating and leading compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding accommodations for students, guests, and visitors with disabilities. The department is responsible for providing all classroom, residence hall, and event accommodations. The university is required by federal legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504, to provide services specifically outlined as accommodations for students with disabilities.

This position exists to act as resource to the campus community to ensure equal access for students, guests, and visitors with disabilities. More specifically, this position provides academic support, advising, and counseling to undergraduate and graduate students with both physical and non-physical disabilities. The Disability Specialist also serves alumni, incoming, prospective, and non-degree seeking students, and students with temporary disabilities. This position provides advising and support to faculty and staff as it relates to their work with students with disabilities in their classes and programs. The Disability Specialist coordinates the accommodations offered through Disability Resources, promotes its services to the campus and community, provides ongoing training, and enforces the university’s compliance with the ADAAA. The overall purpose of this job is to assist in providing quality services to students with disabilities to allow them equal access to all university programs and activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Student Caseload:  

• Students: Meet with incoming, prospective, and former students and their parents regarding disability issues. Manage student caseload; review of medical documentation and intake meetings with students to determine eligibility for services and impact of disability, research disabilities and appropriate accommodations, provide ongoing support in regard to accommodations and classes. Address day-to-day issues/requests/concerns for students with accommodations.
• Faculty: Consult with and advise faculty, staff, and administration regarding the university’s legal obligations for accessibility under the ADAAA and their work with students with disabilities in their classes or programs. Act as a liaison to other campus departments as needed. Provide advocacy on behalf of students to resolve any issues related to accommodations.
• University and community: Advise campus community regarding matters related to ADAAA. Maintain ongoing professional development activities to keep up to date on trends in the field of higher education and disability in the legal arena.

2. Assist with accommodation processes , when needed: Audio books, test administration, and note-taking accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, or a related field
• Two years of professional experience working with disability resources

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, college student personnel, vocational rehabilitation, or equivalent
• Experience working in a post-secondary institution, with experience in disability resources

Any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
