Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the department of Psychiatry at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. 

Dr. Morgan James is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join his lab based at the RWJMS Department of Psychiatry. Using integrated behavioral and systems neuroscience approaches, the James Lab seeks to characterize the brain systems involved in motivated behavior and disorders of motivation (e.g. substance use disorder, binge eating disorder, depression). Dr James' team leverages rodent models and a variety of experimental approaches, including advanced behavioral phenotyping, pharmacology, EEG , fiber photometry, and electrophysiology. The lab also has an active drug development program, which seeks to translate basic science discoveries into pharmacological treatments.   

Postdoctoral fellows will be supervised by Dr. James and will contribute to ongoing projects and develop independent research projects that fall within the broader research goals of the Lab. Responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Fellow include designing, organizing, executing and communicating the results of research studies that further the aims of the lab. Research topics are flexible but will broadly relate to the role of sleep dysregulation and associated hypothalamic systems in psychiatric disorders. The Department has a strong track record in supporting postdocs and junior investigators to successfully obtain competitive research funding including awards from the National Institutes of Health and the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. 

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Carry out behavioral experiments to study dysregulated drug and food intake in rats.
• Conduct EEG and fiber photometry experiments, including preparing laboratory rodents and collecting and analyzing EEG and photometry data. 
• Carry out studies involving using viral transduction techniques that allow for manipulation of neural systems using chemogenetics and optogenetics. 
• Perform data analyses, including behavioral, photometry and EEG data. 
• Conduct behavioral pharmacology studies in rodents. 
• Take a lead role in communicating the results studies through scientific journal articles and conference presentations.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• A PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology, or a related field. 
• Candidates with an MD (or equivalent) and suitable lab experience will also be considered. 
• The successful candidate is expected to have experience with rodent EEG approaches.
