Job Description:
- Installs, repairs, maintains, adjusts, and calibrates valves, thermostats, sensors, coils, dampers, and other components of pneumatic, electric, and Direct Digital Controls for heat, hot water, air conditioning, chilled water to maintain temperatures; performs preventive maintenance for environmental control systems.
- Visually inspects and observes pressure and vacuum gauges; adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
- Tests joints and connections for leaks; cuts, threads, and installs replacement pipe/tubing and joints/couplers.
- Inspects, repairs, and replaces variable air volume ( VAV ) boxes in ductwork.
- Follows and change computer software programs to troubleshoot and correct DDC control routines; uses computers as a diagnostic tool.
- Installs pneumatic and electronic control systems, including sensors, thermostats, receiver controller, valve and damper actuators, electric and pneumatic relays, and DDC controllers. Installs conduit and wire for control systems.
- Uses small, specialized wrenches, pipe wrenches, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, chisels, drills, grinders, pliers, threaders, portable bandsaws, welding/brazing torches, fluke multimeters and other meters and gauges.
- Maintains and repairs valves, controls, ductwork concealed in walls and ceilings and control systems in mechanical rooms, steam tunnels, and on rooftops.
- Works to a height of four feet (48") without scaffolding or ladders; works above four feet with ladders and scaffolding. Uses ships ladders, maintenance stairs or mechanical life devices to access roof top systems.
- Provides information required to update building and systems drawings; may assist in training apprentice.
- Operates a motor vehicle to transport tools, and supplies and materials to work sites.
- Organizes work to minimize materials and man-hours; instructs others in operation and preventive maintenance for tools and equipment. Determines inventory requirement for supplies, materials and replacement parts.
- Maintains the work area, all tools, all equipment, all supplies and any assigned vehicle(s) in a neat, clean and orderly condition and performs all work in accordance with established safety practices.
- Must wear MIOSHA approved safety shoes at all times; other protective gear must be worn when appropriate.
- Performs additional duties as requested by supervisory personnel.
Short Job Description:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship program, or an established, certified training program recognized by the University and/or written verification of a minimum of five (5) years' experience at the journeyperson level in the trade.
- Possess, or obtain within 90 days of the date of hire,
- certification by one or more recognized control manufacturers.
- Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions and safety regulations regarding the performance of job duties and must have sufficient writing and mathematical skills to prepare estimates and supply requisitions.
- Possession of a valid state driver's license.
- Must have experience with computers, computerized systems, and Windows programs.
- Must be able to interpret complex blueprints, diagrams, written specifications, and operating instructions.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job and use the tools of the trade.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures, heights, restricted spaces, noise levels, dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne debris.
- A physical examination administered by the employer's designated physician is required.
