Job Description
The Pediatric Trauma Nurse Coordinator (PTNC) is an RN who facilitates obtaining the program requirements necessary for the American College of Surgeons Pediatric Level II Trauma verification/reverification through identification of issues, finding solutions, and collaborating to affect change. The PTNC uses advanced skills in quality assessment to perform comprehensive quality of care and service audits that develop validated care standards, data repositories and outcome measurements related to trauma patient care. Collects and analyzes bench marking data, focus studies and clinical indicators. Ensures loop closure, prepares reports, presents outcomes, and participates in pediatric organizational-wide continuous improvement projects as it relates to the Trauma Performance and Patient Safety program.
Major Responsibilities
- Work in close collaboration with the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Directors (Adult and Pediatric).
- Takes initiative in planning, developing, organizing, and evaluation of Morristown Medical Center’s Pediatric Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) Program.
- Coordinate performance improvement aspects of the trauma program with appropriate departments, managers, staff, and physicians.
- Ensure that Morristown Medical Center maintains nationally verified as an American College of Surgeons Level II Pediatric Trauma Center.
- Assesses the need for and facilitates the development and compliance with pediatric trauma protocols, guidelines, pathways, and standard order sets.
- Assists with the development and coordination of projects that will enhance the pediatric trauma service.
- Facilitates, assists, and supports the Pediatric Trauma Team in issue resolution and care facilitation.
- Participates in and provides reports for trauma and hospital meetings related to the Performance Improvement of the Pediatric Trauma Program.
- Participate in the interprofessional Pediatric Trauma PIPS Committee. Will share appropriate data and document all information for the peer review protected minutes.
- Incorporate pre-hospital and referring hospitals in the PIPS plan as needed.
- Support hospital quality and strategic initiatives.
Outreach and Training and Education Activities
- Attend state meetings as a Morristown Medical Center pediatric trauma representative.
- Acts as a resource and provides education/in-services on pediatric trauma care throughout the continuum.
- Incorporate pre-hospital and referring hospitals in the PIPS plan as needed.
Maintain and Enhance Professional Role
- Identify own learning needs, update knowledge through attendance at seminars.
- Develop personal skills that facilitate efficiency, manage workload, and set priorities.
- Participates in pediatric trauma resuscitations and ensures established protocols are followed.
- Acts as a resource on trauma care issues.
- Support the Trauma Program Manager by providing back-up leadership, as needed, within the Trauma Support team.
Job Requirements
- Education
- Minimum Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Preferred Master’s degree in nursing, business, or related field
- Work Experience
- Minimum Three (3) years of recent clinical, data analysis or quality improvement experience
- Preferred Three (3) years of trauma care (Floor, ED, Critical Care, trauma program)
- Licenses & Certifications
- Minimum Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey
- Basic and Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Specialty certification preferred (Trauma Certified Registered Nurse, Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse, Certified Critical Care Nurse within 1 year of hire)
- Required Skills
- Clinical background and knowledge necessary to interpret/analyze patient outcomes for all patients
- Superior attention to detail with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
