Title: Teacher Specialist, Literacy (Secondary)

Primary Function : This position is responsible for providing system-wide leadership in Secondary School literacy curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development to support Secondary School teachers.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Keeps abreast of research, trends, requirements and advancement in educating teachers in effective reading instruction through participation in educational associations at the local, district, state, regional and national levels.
  2. Plans and engages teachers in intensive literacy- focused on-going and job-embedded professional development in reading in the content areas, reading and writing skills, and interpretation of assessment results in order to improve the quality of instruction.
  3. Provides the latest research and best practices in the field of reading/literacy education with school staff and administration in implementing effective programs through periodic meetings/trainings with department heads and teachers.
  4. Coordinates the development of curriculum and supplemental programs in reading/literacy education in Secondary Schools.
  5. Coordinates and facilitates professional learning activities for the purpose of improving reading/literacy instruction by teachers.
  6. Assists principals in the evaluation of teachers in reading/literacy education as needed.
  7. Provides guidance to teachers and administrators in reading/literacy.
  8. Ensures that teachers are clear about learning objectives, understand the sequence of teaching and learning in reading/literacy and communicate expectations to school administrators and Academic Affairs.
  9. Supports and guides teachers to select the most appropriate teaching and learning methods and resources to close students' achievement gap.
  10. Establishes and implements clear procedures and practices for assessing, recording and reporting teacher effectiveness as it impacts student achievement.
  11. Analyzes reading/literacy data for the purpose of making informed decisions relative to instructional practices and for monitoring student literacy development.
  12. Serves on the SCCPSS Literacy Task Force and as a liaison when needed in other literacy initiatives at the local, state, and national level.
  13. Assists in the development and implementation of district wide policy for Literacy.
  14. Collaborates with staff on short, medium and long-term planning to develop Literacy in relation to resources, continuous professional development of staff, goals of the district, including its policies and practices regarding literacy and challenging targets for improvement.
  15. Works with teachers to improve classroom management and climate through the implementation of effective instructional methods, specifically related to the five pillars of reading (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  16. Evaluate the teaching and learning of Literacy in the school through monitoring activities including, but not limited to:
    • Lesson observations
    • Work and planning scrutiny
    • Pupil discussions
    • Analysis of results and assessments data
    • Attending planning meetings
    • Leading staff training
    • Informal discussions
  17. Must be willing to complete coaching and reading endorsement through professional learning.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned for the effectiveness of the organization.
Terms of Employment

Incumbents will receive an annual contract. The work calendar will be 229 days.
Salary will be determined based on level of certification and allowable experience. Revised 03/2023
