This position is located within the Bob Stump VAMC and may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy. The incumbent independently performs a variety of expanded complex technical duties and responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician in the pharmacy, which require application of an extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practice. Duties of the pharmacy technician include but are not limited to:

Work Schedule : Tours vary depending on the needs of the service to include rotating days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized.

Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66 .

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.



Basic Requirements :

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).



Grade Determinations : In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.



Pharmacy Technician, GS-06

Experience: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, you are required to possess at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-05) which demonstrates the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. KSAs described at the next lower grade level include: knowledge of basic pharmacy operations, knowledge of pharmaceuticals to perform duties in pharmacy functional areas, knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature (including generic, chemical and proprietary names of drug), ability to fill prescriptions, and ability to use pharmacy information systems or basic pharmacy dispensing equipment with oversight.


In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28 Pharmacy Technician Qualification Standard.


The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06.



Physical Requirements: This work requires regular and recurring physical exertion involving standing for prolonged periods of time, walking, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, handling items not to exceed 40 pounds, and irregular work shifts. Incumbent must be able to walk an average of 3 to 5 miles per day.



Work Environment: This work is performed in the Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy, however, some activities take place in patient care areas in the hospital complex where there is a potential for exposure to communicable diseases. Such areas are adequately heated and ventilated, and normal safety precautions are required.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
