Assistant Project Scientist (Cash Lab)

Position Overview:
A reasonable estimate for this position is $71,500-$91,000 (exempt) or $34.25-$45.59 (non-exempt).


The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one Assistant Project Scientist in the biochemistry and structural biology lab of Dr. Jennifer Cash.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in their academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project Scientist titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program, they are not
required to develop an independent research program or reputation. They will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

Research (80%):

The candidate will lead independent research projects focused on understanding regulation of RhoGEF signaling using cryo-EM as a major approach. This position will entail carrying-out protein expresssion and purification and performing biochemical, biophysical, and cell-based assays and experiments to understand RhoGEF signaling and regulation. The candidate also will be responsible for ordering lab supplies, maintaining equipment, overseeing lab safety, developing protocols, making lab stocks, and maintaining cell culture lines (bacterial, insect, and mammalian) as well as other lab management duties. The candidate will provide technical support and mentoring for junior researchers.

Professional Competence and Activity (20%):
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
The applicant will prepare figures and text for grants and manuscripts. They will prepare figures for presentations and annual reports to granting agencies. They will also edit and critique papers and grants from others in the lab.

SALARY RANGE: A reasonable estimate for this position is $71,500-$91,000 (exempt) or $34.25-$45.59 (non-exempt).
