We are seeking an inspiring, dynamic, and technically accomplished leader to serve as Section Supervisor of the Applied Spectroscopy Section in the Optics and Photonics Group (A4K-7). As a section supervisor, you will help lead and manage a team of 4-6 highly skilled scientists and engineers focused on the development of applied spectroscopic techniques for air and missile defense applications. As a section supervisor you will aid in the development of your staff through mentorship and teaming. We strive to foster an environment in which we can have spirited technical discussions that drive towards truly innovative solutions.

As a Section Supervisor...

• Your primary responsibility will be to maintain and develop applied spectroscopic techniques for a growing sponsor base.
• You will serve as a resource to your section in mentoring and coaching to help ensure staff tasking and career goals are well aligned.
• You will help define, communicate, and execute a vision, strategy, and execution plan that ensures continued excellence within your section.
• You will help inspire and empower staff to create a culture of professionalism that embraces technical excellence, innovation, diversity of thought, inclusion, and continual improvement.
• You will serve as a strategic thought leader and ambassador for your section as well as an inspiring technical contributor and collaborator.
• You will make an impact by detailing work into formal and informal technical reports including, presentations, conference proceedings, and journal articles.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

• Possess a BS degree in engineering, physics, or a related field.
• Have 3 or more years of professional experience working in applied spectroscopy and spectroscopic analyses.
• Have shown experience leading small teams with a proven track record of mentorship.
• Have a demonstrated ability to set direction and implement plans to achieve goals and build capabilities. This includes new initiatives in workplace culture, process improvement, strategic initiatives through engagements both internal and external to the lab and sector, and proposing new technologies through IRADs, propulsion grants, and/or direct sponsor engagement.
• Are willing and able to work on site at APL and travel occasionally in support of meetings, workshops and reviews with government sponsors, contractors, vendors, and field tests.
• Hold an active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

• Hold an advanced degree in engineering, physics, or a related field.
• Have at least 8 years of professional work experience with five or more years of experience applied spectroscopy and spectroscopic analyses.
• Have a demonstrated ability to cultivate strong relationships across organizational boundaries.
• Are able to clearly articulate the sector and branch strategies as well as your own vision for how applied spectroscopy contributes to those efforts and where we could grow to support them better.
• Have a demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff at all levels.
