OVERVIEW
Oregon State University’s College of Forestry seeks a new full-time, 9-month fixed-term Assistant Professor (Teaching) with expertise in wood art, wood design, woodturning, wood sculpture, and/or aesthetically-focused design and manufacturing processes to join our Wood Science & Engineering Department. The Assistant Professor (Teaching) will divide their time between instruction & curricular design, research & scholarship, and institutional & professional service.
This role offers the Assistant Professor (Teaching) an opportunity to diversify Wood Science & Engineering’s reputation for excellence with new focus on artistry and aesthetics. The successful candidate will have experience in teaching and scholarship related to fundamental woodworking, traditional and computerized wood design and manufacturing, and/or wood product design. Abstract design and sculpture work expertise is also valuable in this role.
The Assistant Professor (Teaching) will join a premier forestry college known for our innovative technology and research, located in an Oregon community rich in wood culture and history. They will have the opportunity to explore the deep heritage of Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Knowledge and to engage with the TallWood Design Institute ( a collaboration among OSU's College of Forestry (COF) and College of Engineering, and the University of Oregon’s College of Design.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
75% – Instruction/Teaching:
Teach and/or develop approximately 22 credits per year, which may include graduate-level courses. Teaching assignments and modalities will adjust to reflect instructional needs, including on-campus and online (Ecampus) courses, instruction in the new Professional Science Masters in Wood Innovation for Sustainability, and potential continuing education courses. As assigned, recruit, supervise, support, mentor, and serve as major advisor for MS and PhD students. Mentor undergraduate students and provide opportunities for their involvement in conducting research, design experimentation, or skill training to help foster professional development and placement.
15% – Research/Scholarship:
Conduct research and scholarship. Research and scholarship are likely to be pedagogical but may also relate to wood-based arts, product design or aesthetics. Synthesize and communicate results of this research/scholarship through outlets including refereed journals, juried exhibitions, public art, collaborative art, books and book chapters, scientific, artistic and professional meetings, professional magazines, and professional workshops.
10% – Service:
Participate in departmental, college, and university level affairs and governance, including leadership in curriculum and program development. Service is also expected in support of industry, academic and professional organizations, facilitating student-industry interface and other professional groups and associations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
* An earned advanced degree focused on furniture design, woodturning, wood sculpture, Wood Science, Industrial or Product Design, or a closely related field. Applicants may fulfil this requirement with an earned PhD, or with an earned, terminal master’s degree that included emphasis on wood arts and/or wood design.
* Experience developing and delivering wood arts-specific curricula to secondary and post-secondary learners.
* Demonstrated commitment to student success, evidenced through student advising or pedagogical excellence.
* Demonstrated proficiency in woodworking and product design, including the use of relevant software and tools.
* Experience developing an active research program, including writing proposals for competitively funded grants or experience securing contract income (such as might be done for custom build projects, designs, designs, public art installations, or funded solo exhibitions, etc.)
* Life experiences, training, professional activity, and/or education that demonstrate a commitment to promoting the values and mission articulated in the College of Forestry’s - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Strategic Plan and OSU’s Prosperity Widely Shared plan.
* Demonstrated potential to contribute to the body of professional knowledge on pedagogical approaches or wood design/wood art research.
* Effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) enabling collaboration with a broad spectrum of students, teachers, researchers, and industrial professionals.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
Preferred Qualifications
* History of publication in wood culture outlets such as the International Wood Culture Society, American Association of Woodturners, Fine Woodworking, etc.
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in sustainable design practices.
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in computer-aided design and digital fabrication.
* Experience with industrial partners/applications in the form of research or practice.
* Participation experience in professional organizations or their publications, ideally in a leadership role.
* Proficiency and hands-on experience in robotic fabrication techniques and processes.
* Experience writing and reviewing scholarly articles for publication or jurying gallery and exhibition events or public calls.
* Experience with Indigenous art and/or woodworking, showcasing a cultural appreciation and understanding of diverse artistic traditions including Tribal cultural wood traditions.
Teaching or experience related to business management and/or marketing.
