Overview



The Photo Editor will coordinate planning, workflow, and editing for all photo assignments in the Office of Communications, working closely with photographers, designers, writers, editors, campus partners and photo subjects. The Photo Editor will help ensure the Office of Communications takes advantage of the exciting range of opportunities to highlight dynamic photography presented by the University's new, more visually rich, core website. The Photo Editor will play an important role as a member of the growing Creative Studio team. Important attributes for the Photo Editor include technical photography and editing skills, a collaborative approach and a passion for storytelling through photography.

Photography duties when applicable: Photographing people, places and events on and off campus for University channels and external promotional uses. Assignments can range from taking a portrait of one individual to shooting major campus events such as alumni conferences, Class Day, Commencement, etc. Subjects will range from students, faculty, staff and visitors to classroom and laboratory activities, as well as off-campus activities. After assignments, photographer must process images with basic metadata, edit the images, and prep them for the departmentâ™s photo library.

Responsibilities



⢠Browse through dozens of images to determine the most appropriate visuals to convey a story.
⢠Adhere to proper branding standards and check for image rights and licenses to avoid violations.
⢠Coordinate with editors, writers, photographers, designers, campus partners to identify photography needs.
⢠Assign projects to freelance photographers (when necessary) and keep track of the deadlines.
⢠Ensure all assignments are shot and edited on time.
⢠Review, edit, format, manipulate, and prepare images for use, and sharing.
⢠identify relevant images, edit photos to make them more appealing, and arrange them in a suitable layout.
⢠Manipulate photos to achieve highest quality using the appropriate tools.
⢠Stay up to date with new image editing technologies.

⢠Collaborating with department and other campus staff on scheduling, planning and generating creative storytelling ideas for event coverage and other initiatives that require photos, video or other multimedia. Includes content strategy and team meetings.

⢠Responding to and fulfilling requests that come inbound from our campus partners. Working closely with partners to clearly define their needs; prepping images for digital, print or other formats as needed; and delivering images electronically.

⢠Planning: help scout locations and lighting, help research photo approaches.
⢠Setup/breakdown: packing equipment (cameras, tripods, lights, light stands, reflectors) to take to shoots, carrying bags of photography light stands and setting up backdrops, unloading and organizing/restocking equipment after shoots.
⢠Support during shoots: holding reflectors, adjusting lighting.

⢠Helping with special projects, backing up others in the multimedia department as needed, and other duties as assigned.





Qualifications



Minimum Qualifications:

⢠A minimum of 3-5 years♠experience working on deadline-oriented still photography and video productions, preferably in a journalism or public relations environment.
⢠Professional and creative photo skills in portraiture, studio lighting, shooting on location, color correction, retouching and other post-production work.
⢠Professional and creative video skills in video production and post-production, including hands-on filming, lighting, audio and color adjusting, editing, and exporting.
⢠Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, or equivalent editing software.
⢠Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and successfully, working in a fast-paced collaborative and creative environment.

⢠Minimum of 3 years of using a system to organize scheduling/production and ability to demonstrate this knowledge.
⢠Must have a valid driver's license, have proof of insurance and comply with all University safe driving and parking procedures.
⢠Must meet requirements for lifting/handling equipment, including: Stand or walk for 2-4 hours at one time, up to 6 hours per day. Sit for fewer than 4 hours during an 8-hour day. Lift or carry up to 25 pounds frequently (34-66% of the workday) and up to 50 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday). Lift up to 50 pounds in a range of motion from floor to shoulder height. Push or pull with forces up to 35 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday). Use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling frequently (34-66% of the workday). Possess physical agility and full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance. Hold a camera and/or other relevant equipment to photograph multiple events per day.
⢠Sit at a computer for long periods of time while conducting image searches, retouching photos, and editing videos.
⢠Distinguish colors accurately and be able to color correct photos and videos.

Preferred Qualifications:

⢠Higher education experience.
⢠Photography certification, bachelorâ™s degree or equivalent.
⢠Experience photographing people.
⢠Must be willing to work some nights, weekends and holidays.
⢠Must be polite and have good communication skills to interact with the photographer, photo subjects and occasionally work in an office environment before and after the assignment.
⢠Ability to take initiative, show good judgment, and multitask in a fast-paced environment; a positive attitude; a willingness to work hard and learn.
⢠Proximity to the Princeton campus to help with shoots at short notice.
