Overview

The Agency of Transportation (AOT) is seeking a Technician to perform a variety of duties including working on bridge maintenance projects from conception, through contracting, and until completed, ensuring adherence to all state and federal guidelines. A strong understanding of contractor procurement procedures meeting the state and federal requirements is encouraged. The Technician should have a strong working knowledge of obtaining environmental permitting, Right-of-Way, and other project clearances.




In an emergency event, this position is required to assist in the re-building of our State network along with assisting Districts with their damage collection, reporting in a statewide perspective, and assisting the Transportation Maintenance Engineer with recovery efforts following the event.




Office work is diverse and will consist of phone calls, e-mails, in-person interactions, paperwork, plan reviews, and virtual meetings. Strong computer skills are necessary, experience with MicroStation, Excel spreadsheets, Vpins, and Artemis is a plus. Communication skills are vital, as is experience with public speaking, basic construction knowledge, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new things.




The office is located in Berlin, VT at the Dill Building and telework may be considered.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Attendance at public meetings as an agency representative may be required. Some public speaking may be needed. May encounter hostile attitudes on the part of contractors, property owners, and the general public. Incumbents should possess private means of transportation. Out of state travel may be required. Overtime needs are predictable.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND four (4) years of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, or related field AND six (6) years of experience as described above.

OR

High School diploma or equivalent AND eight (8) years of experience as described above.

OR

Two (2) years or more of experience as an AOT Technician IV with the State of Vermont.

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
