Job description
Reports to: Administrator Classification: Non-Exempt
The Direct Care Counselor provides a safe and nurturing environment for youth as they assist them in regaining the stability necessary to return home or to a community-based placement. Direct Care Counselors provide supervision, support and intervention to clients in treatment, while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of each client.
Job Duties
Perform supervision, protection and care of children individually and in groups at all times.
Assist children in working with a group and in handling individual problems.
Provide intervention to clients as specified in each clients’ treatment plan, including administration of treatment plan goals/objectives and setting of limits for behavior.
Notation of child’s progress; identification of the possible need for additional professional services; and communication of such findings to professional staff.
Assistance with the provision of or access to core services and supports, daily activities and emotional and social supports as necessary.
Complete paperwork requested by the Administrator or Facility Manager, including records related to petty cash, client personal property inventory and daily client log.
Document mental health services according to agency’s documentation quality and timeliness standards.
Complete incident reports, when necessary, before the end of the shift and according to agency’s documentation quality and timeliness standards.
Endure general upkeep of the facility, reporting to the Administrator and making recommendations to address identified problems.
Intervene with the clients’ behavioral program as needed. This includes using a trauma-informed framework to implement crisis intervention strategies.
Remain in compliance with all agency training requirements
May be designated to apply the reasonable and prudent parent standard to decisions involving the participation of a child in age or developmentally appropriate activities after completion of the Prudent Parent Decision Making training.
Assist clients with medication self- administration following completion of the agency’s medication training and successful completion of the post-training assessment.
Any other duties that may be necessary to ensure the health and safety of children in the facility
Direct Care Counselors work between 10pm-7am and must remain awake at all times.

Qualifications
A Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree OR
A valid Child Development Teaching Permit OR
Completion of 12 semester units of early childhood education, adolescent development, or foster and kinship care education AND have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth; OR
A valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor or Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth; OR
A valid vocational training certificate, or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journeyperson who instructs children in vocational skills and have at least 100 hour of experience working with youth as a mentor, athletic coach, teacher, vocational coach, tutor, counselor, or other relevant experience as determined by CDSS; OR
Previously been employed as a full time staff or served as a volunteer at a group home, STRTP, or substance abuse treatment program for at least one year; OR
Relevant life experience in the child welfare, mental health or juvenile justice systems as a consumer, mentor, or caregiver or other relevant experience as determined by CDSS.
Meet all new employee training requirements prior to direct work with clients.
Flexible schedule with ability to work evenings and weekend days as needed

Knowledge and understanding of the needs of children served in a children’s residential facility.
Skills and ability to engage and develop rapport with children who have various backgrounds.
Skills and ability to provide consistency and behavioral limits through relationship-based interventions
Skills to communicate effectively with the ability to solve problems in a collaborative manner
At least 21 years of age
Clear TB test, health screening, criminal background check, and any other mandatory State or Federal licensing and certification requirements.
Possess a valid driver license; Have access to a reliable and insured vehicle Have a clean DMV print out
no more than one point if under 25 years of age
no more than two points if over 25 years of age
Current CPR and First Aid Certification
Must complete criminal record review and a Child Abuse Center Index check in accordance with applicable law.
