Job Description and Duties

Come join the Division of Multibenefit Initiatives and plan and implement multi-benefit improvements to the State Plan of Flood Control. We are looking for three enthusiastic, people-oriented, and productive Environmental Scientists who are quick learners, can take direction and run with it, and want to contribute to a climate resilient California.

You will be required to provide environmental planning, environmental analysis and compliance expertise, to support the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan, Conservation Strategy goals and objectives. You will coordinate closely with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, planners, and engineers as well as interested parties. We strongly desire project management skills, GIS skills, a strong and broad understanding of environmental policy and practices related to the flood system in the Central Valley, and the ability to closely collaborate and clearly communicate across disciplines within DWR as well as with key State, federal, and local agencies, partners, and interested parties. 

Our ideal candidates will be highly motivated; possess excellent oral and written communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, and a working knowledge of fish and aquatic-related biology as well as ecology principles; can manage multiple concurrent assignments and work effectively in a team environment and have CEQA and permitting work experience. Problem-solving, organizational skills and a positive attitude towards teamwork are essential. Knowledge of Python would be helpful, but not required.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  1. Knowledge or experience with the preparation or review of environmental documentation pursuant to the California Quality Act and related environmental laws and regulations, including but not limited to the National Environmental Policy Act, federal Clean Water Act, Porter-Cologne Water Quality Control Act, California Fish and Game Code, and State and federal endangered species acts;
  1. Experience working with ArcGIS, ArcPro, or comparable geographic information system software to organize and analyze geospatial data sets and generate related maps and graphics;
  1. Ability to perform project management coordination, and have knowledge and practice applying project management principles, techniques, and tools;
  1. Ability to work independently and in cooperation with other scientists and engineers, promote partnerships with internal/external partners, follow through on commitments, and solicit and consider internal/external input when completing work assignments.

The appointed candidate will be eligible to participate in a hybrid-teleworking schedule in accordance with an approved employee telework agreement.  Employee telework agreements will require minimum in-person attendance and supervisors/managers will guide coordination of in-person schedules to maximize collaboration, team building, comradery, knowledge transfer, succession planning, and productivity within team structures such as sections, branches, offices, and matrix teams.
