Department Overview
Gas R&D purpose is to detect, develop, test, and introduce new methods and technologies in all functions of Gas Operations. To optimally perform this mission at the lowest possible cost, Gas R&D operates in collaboration with other utilities and pipelines operators through national and international R&D leading consortia such as: the Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI), NYSEARCH, and the Operation Technology Development (OTD) group of GTI, the Gas Technology Institute. It also actively seeks for cooperation with PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration), the California Energy Commission PIER program and other public organizations. Another approach frequently used is to participate in ad-hoc consortia for specific projects called Joint Industry Projects (JIP). When R&D projects are completed and new solutions are made available, Gas R&D initiates their deployment through workshops, training, pilots, etc. in close collaboration with the other Gas Operations teams. Today, Gas R&D manages a portfolio of more than 150 active R&D projects.
