Job description

Supports student success and retention efforts by providing holistic advising, including academic advising, intervention, and personal support to undergraduate students. P rovides functional and organizational support for the College's Living Learning Community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Provides holistic academic advising for an assigned caseload within the College. Coordinates the Living Learning Community.



Ensures students are registered in appropriate classes each semester, are making appropriate degree progress, and are achieving satisfactory academic performance. 



Regularly monitors advisees' progress, including responding to CRM Advise alerts. 



Keeps students informed and engaged in essential college processes, procedures, and policies.



Serves as an advocate to help students navigate college policies and procedures.



Collaborates with student support areas as needed to direct students to additional academic and emotional support services. Advises and assists current and prospective students regarding interpretation of placement assessment, ascertainment of desired career and academic goals, development of an academic plan, establishment of program requirements related to academic objectives, and course scheduling and registration.  Stays up to date and is proficient in talking about the ALEKS placement assessment. 



Collaborates within the unit and across other colleges and divisions to support academic advising, orientation, recruiting, career service, and retention programs and activities.  



Maintains student files, records, and data in accordance with federal, state and university regulations. 


Maintains electronic files according to college processes and meets deadlines to keep these current. 



Teaches LLC sections of YSU 1500: Success Seminar; students in these sections will comprise part of the advising caseload. Assists with the development of course content related to BCHHS sections. Participates in mandatory training sessions related to course content, advising, University services, and other skills related to teaching YSU 1500 and advising students in their first year.



Coordinates with the Office of Career Exploration & Development to provide BCHHS students with resume help, career information, and part-time job opportunities.



Advises incoming BCHHS first-year and transfer students at Orientation.  Carries a reduced advising caseload of undetermined HHS students including students who are not accepted into restricted majors; assists other BCHHS advisors when needed.



Advises incoming BCHHS International Students via Webex prior to their arrival on campus each semester; coordinates with BCHHS advisors to obtain advising materials.  



Assists in transitioning advisees to faculty advisors upon the completion of 60 credit hours. Assist with recruiting and advising CCP and Partnership students.



Coordinates and oversees the College's Living Learning Community (LLC). Recruits students at events, presents on the LLC at recruiting events.  Works collaboratively with the university constituents to design and implement curricular and co-curricular programming; maintains marketing materials, LLC budget, and student records.



Participates in College and University activities and committees as needed. Participates in professional development.



Other Functions and Responsibilities:  Utilizes e xcellent verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrates proficiency with MS Office suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).



Demonstrates a willingness to learn new skills and the ability to use different avenues of communication (i.e., social media, texting platforms, email, etc.).



Displays a commitment and desire to help students from diverse backgrounds.



Utilizes excellent interpersonal skills and a student-first attitude. Demonstrates the ability to work independently, collaboratively, and cooperatively as a team member and with other departments across campus.



Interacts continually and effectively with students, parents, and the public; build positive relationships with faculty, staff, and departments.



Employs a strong attention to detail and time management skills that ensure the ability to manage a caseload of advisees.



Performs other related duties as assigned.



Equipment Operated:  Computer and all other standard office equipment.



Work Schedule:  Typically, Monday through Friday. Travel may be required. May require some weekends and evenings.



Supervision Exercised:  May exercise supervision over student employees.

Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures:  None



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 



Knowledge of: University policies and procedures*; office practices and procedures; department/division goals and objectives*; department/division policies and procedures*; workplace safety practices and procedures*; English grammar and spelling; records management; office management; project management. 



Skill in: Use of office equipment; typing, data entry; computer operation; use of computer software and other programs applicable to the assigned department/division*. 



Ability to: Collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; determine material and equipment needs; compile and prepare reports; use proper research methods to gather data; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; effectively interact with personnel and public to answer routine questions; train or instruct others; move quickly and effectively from one tasks to another; work independently and in a team environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:  At least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; one or more years of experience working as a college academic advisor or related position with student interaction.



Preferred Qualifications:  Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or another related field; ex perience working with students in exercise science or related major;  knowledge of academic advising best practices; familiarity with and interest in the concept of Living Learning Communities; experience using case management technology; experience using Banner Student Information System; experience planning and implementing university wide programming; experience with social media, and other relevant programs. Knowledge of related university academic policies and procedures.  Self-starter, ability to resolve issues using critical thinking.
