Overview
The Director of Performance Excellence is responsible for the operation and leadership of the Performance Excellence team in collaborating within Health Care District (HCD) in the lean transformation efforts. The position is responsible for managing and leading initiatives to create a system-wide improvement methodology grounded in lean thinking and application. In addition, this position is responsible for assisting operational leaders to execute improvement plans that align with strategic objectives and sustaining those improvements. This leader is accountable for reducing variation and waste in operational areas collaboratively chosen by Executive Stakeholders and Management Members. The position reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer and is considered to be an exempt member of the HCD Leadership team.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Work closely with operations leaders and their staff to plan, lead and deploy Lean Six Sigma projects that will produce significant cost savings and lean transformation of HCD.
- Organize and deploy Lean Six Sigma training events that will enhance the skill base of the HCD leadership and staff.
- Create and communicate the project status reports to provide credibility and visibility for the Operations Improvement team as needed.
- Be an active team member providing knowledge and expertise to all continuous improvement projects active or planned.
- Provide help in brain storming, problem solving or other necessary areas to the rest of the team.
- Identify savings and assist system departments in removing non-value-added cost from of their budget.
- Assist systems leaders in maintaining the established results.
- Designs, develops, and implements visual management systems in collaboration with operational leaders that help to sustain changes and audit improved processes for compliance.
- Leverages a broad knowledge and understanding of business processes, corporate strategy and management of operations.
- Form partnership with operations leaders and staff based on mutual respect, influence and leadership.
- Collaborate with the rest of the Operations Improvement team to conduct operational analysis.
- Demonstrate success operating within a culture that values a collaborative, flexible, participative and coaching-by-influence management style.
- Promote the recognition of system leaders and staff that participated in successful projects.
- Display leadership, people and change agent skills used to provide operational expertise and inspiration, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, adept at working with management at all levels of the organization.

- Ensures the activities are implemented and completed on time within budget on or above the established targets.
- Demonstrates solid analytical and diagnostic skills and abilities and the knowledge of statistical process controls.
- Serves in a supervisory capacity for the Performance Excellence department: responsible for supervising, mentoring, hiring, coaching and conducting performance evaluations.

Certification:
- LEAN Six Sigma Black Belt Required
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in either solely health care system lean/process improvement transformation or a combination of health care and manufacturing industries; preference for experience in clinical operations within the larger picture of the operation of a successful health care system.
- 2 years of process improvement management experience in addition to the above in health care/manufacturing would be preferred.
- Experience in project management, process implementation and change management that would be associated with a major lean/process improvement successful initiative.
- Outstanding facilitation and presentation skills in an organizational matrix, inspirational lean/process improvement visionary qualities that would bring those motivational qualities to HCD.
- Strong analytical experience; with the ability to connect more tactical operational targets with the bigger strategic and long-term vision.
- Experienced in hiring, supervising and mentoring a process improvement team of professionals tasked with bringing the lean/process improvement vision and capability to the system and work within highly ambiguous and influencing environments.
