ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND ROLE

POSITION SUMMARY
The focus of the role is to oversee the fund development for the growing organization which includes ongoing operations, expansion, and a capital campaign for an $11M workforce development nonprofit and vocational school. The CDO will be responsible for soliciting major gifts from new and existing individual donors while stewarding and cultivating institutional funders, and accessing public funding, specifically for the capital campaign and regional expansion. The Chief Development Officer will oversee all fundraising and marketing efforts and provide inspirational and strategic leadership in developing a plan that will enable the organization to thrive financially.
The ideal candidate will be a high energy individual with exceptional leadership, partnering abilities internally and externally, organizational and interpersonal skills, excellent writing and verbal capabilities, and the ability to conceptualize and implement effective fund development, fundraising, and marketing strategies. The CDO leads a Development and Marketing Team of five other professionals, is a key member of JobTrain’s Executive Team, and staffs the Development and Marketing Committee of the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate also understands networking, relationship building, professional development, team dynamics and Economic Mobility.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED)
Fund Development
· Oversee and spearhead all fundraising and marketing efforts and provide inspirational and strategic leadership in developing a plan that will enable the organization to thrive financially.
· Monitor strategic plans frequently for successful fundraising
· Leads department in creation of stretch goals, objectives and action plans aligned with strategies.
· Cultivates and nurtures relationships with current and potential individual supporters and corporate and foundation sponsors to achieve donor retention, renewal and upgrade.
· Oversee and help prioritize the preparation of grant requests to private and government funders.
· Understands foundation, corporate, individual and government grant making processes, timelines and pipelines
Capital Campaign Fundraising
· Lead the final and most expansive stage of a $45M capital campaign for a new JobTrain Headquarters building in East Palo Alto
· Build individual donor strategies to advance the campaign
· Track as a separate stream, understanding what can and can’t be applied to Capital fundraising.
Expansion
· Create geographic expansion funding strategy - moving into different regions and building funding analysis and planning
Marketing
· Identify and capitalize on opportunities to increase agency visibility and elevate public image.
· Cultivate and nurture relationships with the media and community leaders.
· Oversee the design and creation of presentation, branding and solicitation materials, including marketing collateral, website, social networks, newsletters, and annual report.
· Provide quality, ongoing donor communication.
· Continuously evolve website and social media use as a key tool in fundraising and marketing.
Internal Communications
· Oversee the development and executing of a strategic internal communications plan aligned with the JobTrain’s vision, mission, values, culture, and strategic goals.
Oversee the internal communications processes, programming, timelines and message/media.
Development Leadership
· Oversee and participate in fundraising and public relations activities, including research, writing, materials design, and relationship-building.
· Develop and manage a motivated and productive development and marketing team.
· Be an active and contributing member of JobTrain’s management and executive team.
· Serve as staff to the Board’s Development and Marketing Committee.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
o Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Directly relevant experience may substitute for some education.
o 5+ years progressively challenging fund development and marketing experience and leading a Development and marketing team in a Senior/C-level Leadership role
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (required)
o Quantifiable experience completing a major capital campaign to the finish line
o Demonstrated ability to solicit major gifts for a capital campaign
o Proven experience with developing funding strategy for geographic expansion into different and new regions.
o Success in creating individual donor solicitation, stewardship and activation strategy
