Primary Role This position serves as the company’s top technical expert in wastewater engineering and manages a staff of engineering and technical professionals that are responsible for four primary functions:Provide consultancy and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) during engineering planning and design, as well as technical support during construction, commissioning, and operation of wastewater treatment, conveyance, buried infrastructure, and biosolids facilities across the American Water business. Assume lead technical responsibilities for key projects. Manage team of internal technical resources and external consulting firms on assigned projects. Develop and update engineering standards to maximize performance, reliability, efficiency, and value of wastewater and biosolids assets. Maintain in-depth knowledge and awareness of past and future trends in technology and regulations related to wastewater and biosolids treatment, reuse, and disposal on both state and national levels. Support state engineering and business development teams with evaluating potential acquisitions and developing tools to aid in efficient transition of ownership. #LI-JS1Key Accountabilities

• Serve as the primary technical advisor for Company engineering and operational issues related to wastewater engineering.
• Manage and develop team.
• Recognize the abilities of staff and coach and counsel individuals through an effective Performance Appraisal and Development Program to ensure continued professional development.
• Support engineering planning efforts as they relate to wastewater process engineering and system assets to help assess risk and determine appropriate capital investment strategies to optimize performance of these assets.
• Work closely with the Engineering Planning, SCADA, and Asset Reliability teams to develop and help implement a strategy focused on assessment and monitoring, renewal, and appropriate maintenance of wastewater assets.
• Support or lead business development efforts and participate in external professional activities that enhance American Water’s standing as a leading wastewater utility, and engage with state, regional, and national environmental and economic regulators to support and advance regulations and policies that benefit the environment and American Water’s customers.
• Lead and oversee development of Engineering Standards, specifications, and equipment manufacturer recommendations to support initiatives established in conjunction with the Engineering Leads.
• Develop and maintain strategic and strong working relationships with engineering firms, materials and equipment vendors, and contractors. Knowledge/Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of engineering design theory and practice, project management, construction and contract management, power and controls, water/wastewater facilities and utility operations.
• Knowledge of current trends in the regulated and non-regulated wastewater industry.
• Knowledge of computer modeling, including process (BioWIN and/or GPS-X), hydraulic/hydrologic, and environmental receiving water models.
• Understanding of US regulations (commercial and environmental), legislation and trends impacting the wastewater industry.
• Sound business acumen and judgment.
• Understanding of utility management theories, practices, and trends. Experience/Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; advanced degree preferred.
• Minimum of 18 years of experience in wastewater design and project management required. A combination of wastewater engineering with other water related experience may also be considered.
• Minimum of 5 years direct supervision of engineering staff. Direct management responsibility for teams delivering project results and/or technical services may also be considered. Certifications & Licenses
• PE preferred. In lieu of PE, advanced degree from ABET-accredited institution required.Travel Requirements
