SUMMARY
The Ewing Yard Assistant Manager serves as the front line for in-yard customer relations, customer
service, yard and vehicle maintenance, and daily yard operations. A Yard Assistant Manager provides
meaningful service to our customers in the most pleasant and professional manner possible. A Yard
Assistant Manager will support the Yard Manager’s and company’s goals.
Requirements
The Yard must have a minimum of 4 employees (i.e.: 1 Yard Manger and 3 Yard Service Professionals)
to be eligible to have a Yard Assistant Manager. To be considered for the position the employee
must: have at least 2 years of employment with Ewing, have completed SP3, display a propensity for
a future management position as determined by the Yard Manager and Regional Manager, and the
decision must be approved by the Regional Manager.
Employees that become a Yard Assistant Manager must attend New Manager training within the first
year of receiving the promotion.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTIBILITIES
Yard Assistant Managers are expected to support Yard Managers by performing the tasks and
activities required for successful yard operations, as well as providing in-store customer support.
A Yard Assistant Manager will also help with the coaching and delegation of duties for the Yard
Service Professionals in the absence of the Yard Manager. Additional requirements include
completion of tasks and activities assigned in support of annual plans established by the Yard, its
Region and Division.
The job performance of a Yard Assistant Manager will be evaluated based upon their effectiveness in
executing the duties and responsibilities listed below.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Leadership & Communication
• Conduct yourself with professionalism in all communication with fellow employees, customers,
vendors, management, and Field Support Center staff.
• Attend and participate in monthly yard meetings.
• Read and contribute to Company communications, including (but not limited to) the Branch Briefs,
E-News Alert, President’s Message, regional newsletters, etc.
• Coach peers to enhance job performance to ensure they are qualified to deliver the Ewing service
standards and expected customer experience.
• Serve as a conflict resolution facilitator for employees, customers, vendors, and Field Support
Center staff in the absence of the Yard Manager.
• Champion Ewing culture and commitment throughout all business activities.
• Communicate all operational and customers service issues with Yard Manager.
• Participate and represent Ewing in relevant regional organizations, associations and activities.
Operations
• Execute the annual plan for the yard in accordance with the Company’s strategic objectives under
the direction of the Yard Manager.
• Perform daily yard operations, including (but not limited to) inventory management, customer
service, order entry, end of day completion, stock transfer and vendor shipping and receiving,
debit memos, compliance, marketing database maintenance, merchandising and other general duties,
under the direction of the Yard Manager.
• Perform regular physical inventories and cycle counts. Physical Inventories are performed three
times a year, and participation is mandatory. Inventory is typically performed on Friday and
Saturday, and multiple prep days may be required before inventory. Inventory includes pre-counting,
bar-coding product, counting using the wireless handheld, variance counting and reconciliation.
Cycle counts are performed weekly and should be completed on Saturday, unless the yard is closed.
• Use of payroll system to regularly to clock in and out in accordance with Company policy and
state and federal laws and regulations.
• Maintain facility, including (but not limited to) vehicle/equipment maintenance and logs, supply
stocking levels, cleanliness, organization of the yard, and suggest cost-saving strategies.
• Adopt and master the use of basic company tools and systems including technology, software,
email, etc. and adhere to company policy.
• Maintain a safe working environment and compliance with state/federal safety standards.
• Provide superior customer service at all times.
• Delegate duties and supervise Yard Service Professionals in the Yard Manager’s absence or at the
Yard Manager’s direction.
• Conduct other duties as assigned by management, which may include driving a company vehicle.
Professional Development
• Actively participate in the Service Professional training program, by using Ewing’s University,
demonstration guides, assessment process and Individual Development Plans (IDPs).
• Assist in the training of Yard Service Professionals by using Ewing’s University and
demonstration guides, as directed by the Yard Manager.
• Participate in regular performance reviews based on the yard business plan and your Individual
Development Plan, and confirm reviews.
• Update personal job knowledge and skill set by participating in ongoing educational
opportunities (ie. Regional meetings, vendor product training, and all pertinent training
opportunities).
Business Development
• Execute and attend yard marketing and business development events, including educational
seminars and hands-on workshops, vendor product days, customer appreciation events, barbeques,
etc., as directed by the Yard Manager.
• Maintain customer relationships and participate in education and business development
opportunities for customers.
• Provide support for Yard Manager and regional sales team members in serving customers and
achieving sales objectives.
• Perform sales development activities, including (but not limited to) basic project quoting and
telephone, print and email marketing campaigns.
• Support the Yard Manager, as directed, in execution of yard merchandizing.
