Job description
The University of California, Riverside (UCR) seeks applications for an innovative and dynamic librarian to work collaboratively to support the scholarly and research activities of UCR faculty, researchers, and students. Reporting to the Director of Research Services (also part of this cluster hiring, see academic recruitment JPF01874)), the incumbent will be the driving force of the library's Digital Scholarship Program to support campus research and teaching through interdisciplinary collaboration on cutting-edge projects in Humanities, Social Sciences, and STEM. The incumbent will seek opportunities to embed in campus research and teaching teams to directly address UCR community's digital scholarship needs. These include but are not limited to: designing and implementing collaborative digital scholarship projects; contributing novel ideas, expertise, and methods to UCR faculty, researchers, and students' intellectual discourse and advancement; and providing digital scholarship related outreach and consultation services. In partnership with other library colleagues as well as UCR colleges and academic programs, the incumbent will continuously develop specialized and sought-after digital scholarship expertise synergistic with UCR faculty's research and teaching agendas. Ideal candidates are highly collaborative problem-solvers specializing in digital scholarship methods and tools. They should also enjoy conducting research and teaching across discipline lines to explore novel fronts and be committed to lifelong learning and collaboration.

The UCR Library is comprised of two facilities housing more than 4,900,000 volumes, 1,740,000 electronic books, 120,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 27,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 100, including 36 FTE librarians and 65 FTE staff personnel as well as students, in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomas Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 40.8 million volumes, including 4.3 million digitized contents contributed to HathiTrust, UC's more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC's California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Research Services (also included in this cluster hiring) in the Research and Technology Division, the Digital Scholarship Librarian will work collaboratively to support the scholarly and research activities of UCR faculty, researchers, and students by developing specialized research and instructional partnerships; building a digital scholarship support program; and providing general research support and outreach.
* Utilizes digital scholarship tools and methods in support of research and instructional applications
* Proactively seeks out and develops opportunities for partnerships with faculty and academic units on campus, effectively deploying technical, scholarly, and project management skills to plan and execute innovative, sustainable digital projects, particularly in the humanities and social sciences
* Offers workshops and training on digital scholarship methods or tools
* Helps plan, and participates in, special events or programs (for example, a research boot camp or digital scholarship incubator)
* Advocates for sharing digital outputs (for example, publishing a digital project using an open license) and advising on open research and reproducibility applications
* In collaboration with the Digital Initiatives Specialist (and other library colleagues as appropriate), develop a robust digital scholarship support program, including advising on developing spaces to support this activity
* Maintains knowledge and practical expertise in an evolving interdisciplinary landscape of digital scholarship tools and methods, including suggesting how new ideas and services can be applied to the local environment
* Provides research support as part of the Research Services librarian team (consultations, workshops, chat reference, and other departmental and library-wide collaborations)
* Promotes the UCR Library's digital scholarship and other research support activities
* Collaborates on research services projects with library colleagues across the organization
* Participates in library-wide activities, administrative committees, special projects, and library programs; representing the UCR Library on University of California standing committees and ad-hoc groups, as assigned
UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit; The University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.
Appointment at rank of Assistant Librarian to Librarian - Potential Career depending upon qualifications and experience. Advancement through the librarian ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every two to three years, each of which includes substantial peer review.
