Veterinary Assistant - Central Sterilization

General Purpose: To assist the Fetch team to provide the best patient care possible by preparing, sterilizing, and processing all equipment required for surgical, arthroscopic, endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures.

Essential Job Functions:

- Understand the general function and use of the surgical and sterilization equipment.

- Understand the mode of sterilization based on equipment requirements (ethylene oxide, steam autoclave, etc)

- Understand the basic function of all the equipment being used.

- Ability to trouble shoot issues involving the sterilization equipment.

- Perform sterilization of equipment.

- Empty steam autoclaves, plasma, and gas sterilizers throughout the day.

- Maintain and clean the steam autoclaves as required.

- Clean and maintain sterilization equipment (spore testing) as recommended buy manufacturer

and the OSHA Safety Coordinator.

- Maintain gas sterilization units and supplies.

- Become familiar with the instruments, surgical packs, and instrument care.

- Wash, dry and fold all surgery laundry; wrap and sterilize.

- Maintain inventory and sterilize all surgical soft goods: drapes, foot wraps, etc.

- Wash, dry, pack, label, and sterilize all laparoscopic, arthroscopic, and endoscopic equipment.

- Ensure accurate spelling and names of all laparoscopic, arthroscopic and endoscopic equipment.

- Wash and sterilize endotracheal tubes as needed.

- Wash and maintain suction containers and surgical brushes.

- Stock all surgical suites with packs and accessory equipment and sterilized supplies. Ensure all

packs are in date (not expired)

- Advise Inventory Supervisor on ordering of surgical gowns, towels, wrap cloths, implants, etc.

- Advise Facilities Maintenance of problems and needed repairs of cleaning / sterilization

equipment.

- Train and oversee new employees in all the above.

- Color code all instruments.

- Update and Maintain Pack Prep Manual

- Understand and abide by the surgical principles to maintain sterile field.

- Open sterile tables and instruments for the surgical team as needed.

- Assist surgical team in cleaning / sanitizing surgical suites between procedures.

- Assist surgical team in deep cleaning surgical suites as necessary.

- Assist surgical team with breakdown surgical suites at the end of the day.

Requirements

- High School Diploma or equivalent required; certificate in Sterile Processing and Distribution

preferred.

- Gas Sterilization Certification required

- Strong attention to detail

- Hospital experience of 6 months or more.

- Excellent communication skills.

- Strong work ethic and positive attitude.

- Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.

- Ability to act as a team member.

Must have the ability to respond quickly in urgent situations using all senses. During the normal

workday, employee may occasionally lift and/or push/pull up to 50 pounds.
