Senior Maintenance Mechanic

The Cornell University campus is widely admired as one of the world's most beautiful academic settings. The Division of Facilities and Campus Services (FCS) is committed to providing the highest quality service to faculty, students, staff, alumni, and visitors. Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. FM serves as a partner within the zone structure for the Contract Colleges (CC), Endowed (EN), and Student and Campus Life (SCL) zones. As a key steward of the University's facilities, FM is responsible for facility assessments, skilled trades, general construction, building care, grounds, recycling, asbestos, and the management of planned, corrective, and preventive maintenance.

Position Summary:

Act as a representative for the Zone Crew by supporting the mission, goals, vision, and initiatives of Facilities Management. Observe and enforce compliance with work rules, safety policies, and the UAW contract. Promptly report performance feedback and violations of procedures/policies to the Zone Facilities Manager (ZFM). Assist in the training of all new maintenance mechanic staff in building systems and operations.

Organize and coordinate all special projects work for the maintenance mechanics, including all appliance replacement moves and installations in the Student and Campus Life (SCL) zone.

Assist the Zone Facilities Manager with coordination and assignment of work for the maintenance mechanics. Oversee work to ensure productivity and efficiency expectations are met. Communicate regularly with the ZFM about work progress and potential delays.

Act as the primary first responder for maintenance mechanic emergencies and backup for areas when mechanics are absent.

Liaison with Unit Facilities Representatives, vendors, and FM Procurement for maintenance mechanic ordering.

The Senior Maintenance Mechanic assigned to work in the Student and Campus Life Zone will oversee and perform corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance. Senior Maintenance Mechanics working in the Endowed and Contract College Zones will focus on preventive maintenance.

This is a union position within the United Auto Worker's bargaining unit (UAW). The rate of pay is $29.41/hour. At the end of the probationary period, employees will be required to pay union dues per Article 1 of the Agreement.

We Require These Qualifications:

• High school education or equivalent.
• At least 7 years of experience in commercial or industrial building trades and/or performing corrective and preventive maintenance on commercial or industrial facilities equipment.
• Strong knowledge of building systems and equipment and an ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and drawings.
• Excellent interpersonal, supervisory/leadspersons, teamwork, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead others.
• Ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment to accomplish goals.
• Proven ability to independently make sound and immediate on-site decisions within established guidelines.
• Provide excellent customer service for a diverse and student-oriented campus community.
• Demonstrated ability to use computers including workflow and assignment of service requests.
• Ability to lift and/or more up to 75 lbs. and the ability to ascend and descend heights with agility and freedom of movement to work in confined and hazardous spaces (crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, shafts, sub-basements, attics, etc.), some of which must be accessed by ladder.
• The Senior Maintenance Mechanic assigned to work in the Student and Campus Life Zone must be able to obtain and maintain a CPO Certification for swimming pool operations.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
• Available to work overtime as duties require, including weekends and shifts.
• Must have reliable transportation as may be required to use own vehicle on the job.

You Will Be a Top Candidate with Our Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with the MAXIMO Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Knowledge of OSHA and typical institutional requirements for work site safety (lockout/tag out, hazardous materials and wastes, personal protective equipment, etc.).
• Familiarity with iPad functionality.
