JR SPECIALIST - Wan Lab POSITION DESCRIPTION The Junior Specialist role involves providing research support for Dr. Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan's laboratory within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Responsibilities include conducting research on metabolic health issues associated with diet, utilizing cell line and mouse models. The position entails active involvement in interdisciplinary studies that explore molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, or immunology in the context of metabolic diseases and cancer.
The Junior Specialist will have a specific focus on a specialized area, contributing technical expertise in research equipment, instrumentation, and research methods for project planning and execution. Engaging in publishable research activities is a key aspect, involving the review of journal articles and participation in discussions on research findings. Additionally, Junior Specialists are expected to actively participate in professional/technical societies, educational and research organizations, and contribute to the review of research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications within their area of expertise.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)- Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and senior lab personnel on the design, execution, analysis, and presentation of research projects.
- Contribute to research activities involving immunoassays (e.g., western blots, ELISA, multiplex assays), gene cloning, RNA/DNA/protein extraction, PCR, mammalian cell line culturing, sample preparation for genomic analysis, and other lab duties as needed.
- Present research results through short oral presentations or poster presentations at scientific meetings.
- Organize and summarize final data in graphical or tabular form for publications, grant proposals, and reports.
- Contribute to writing research results for publication by drafting manuscript sections and assisting with manuscript editing.
- Opportunities for co-authorship or acknowledgment in publications for Junior Specialist.
- Manage laboratory supplies, maintain a comprehensive database of supplies and purchases, and keep detailed inventory and freezer logs for reagents/materials.
- Follow standard operating procedures to maintain a clean and orderly lab environment.
- Assist other lab members in their work as needed. II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)
- The incumbent will have opportunities to develop presentation abilities in laboratory meetings and the departmental meeting and other on-campus events.
- The incumbent will be encouraged to research and summarize appropriate literature and discuss during laboratory meetings.
- The incumbent will be encouraged to have membership with appropriate societies and participate in appropriate meetings and groups on-campus. III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
- May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
- Mentorship of undergraduate students including summer interns in the Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as well as rotating biomedical students.
