Job description
Landscape Technician Primary Purpose: Under general supervision, the Landscape Technician will perform tasks relating to irrigation, chemical application, grounds, and other duties as assigned for the University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law. The duties and assignments performed will require use of considerable independent judgement.
Essential Functions: - Responsible for maintenance of lawns including mowing, edging and fertilizing.
- Responsible for weeding and mulching landscape beds.
- Trim small trees, hedges and shrubs and gauge water requirements so lawns, shrubs, trees are healthy. Remove unwanted, dead or damaged trees - could include consulting with vendors.
- Responsible for Irrigation Management & Maintenance Systems (IMMS) program and scheduling. Perform irrigation work including watering gardens, lawns and landscape.
- Replace and repair irrigation sprinklers, pipes, valves and controllers. Including troubleshooting irrigation problems, and installing new or re-designing sprinkler systems.
- Program and maintain irrigation clocks and controllers.
- Monitor and maintain plants healthy.
- Perform maintenance of campus grounds, using small and large equipment and hand tools and oversee and assist crews.
- Work on special projects and assist in special construction projects as required.
- Perform minor repair of equipment.
- Identify landscape pest problems, maintenance and/or repair needs.
- Assist with set-up and tear-down of outdoor stages, tarps, tables and chairs.
- Collaborate with departments in completing assigned tasks related to landscaping.
- Display the necessary initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications: - High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Five (5) years of experience related to groundskeeping/landscaping.
- Qualified Applicator License or Qualified Applicators Certificate through the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelors Degree.
- Five (5) years of directly related irrigation experience.
- Certified irrigation technician or certified water auditor.
- Knowledge to maintain and operate small and large grounds equipment.
- Good communication skills and ability to work well with others.
- Working knowledge of lawn maintenance, irrigation work and of lawn maintenance equipment use and repair.
- Working knowledge of pest and diseases in landscape.
- Ability to read and understand chemical labels.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
- Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises. Extensive physical activity. Constant bending, walking, standing, lifting up to seventy (70) lbs, pushing or pulling up to seventy (70) lbs. Ability to climb a ladder. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Repetitive use of hands.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to various temperatures and weather elements. Work performed during standard business hours. Must be willing to work weekends and odd hours in emergency situations.
Valid drivers license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the Universitys fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range: $29.50 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidates qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
