Job description

Following established procedures and under general guidance of the Assistant Controller, performs a wide variety of complex operational accounting activities in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) including, but not limited to, record keeping, general ledger account reconciliations, and preparation of monthly journal entries for accounting closing. Main responsibilities include bank account reconciliation, ATM vault reconciliation, loan accounting, and fixed asset accounting. Assist with incoming and outgoing wire process.

• Responsible for daily FRB and/or FHLB bank reconciliations. Resolve any discrepancies or unreconciled items on a timely manner.
• Balance daily ATM vaults and perform timely reconciliation. Acts as liaison with the ATM servicing company for matters relating to cash ordering and balancing report. Submit ATM cash order via FedCash Services in FedLine Advantage.
• Perform daily and monthly residential real estate loan (housed in FICS) reconciliation including report retrieval, journal entries on principal and interest payments, loan payoffs and interest accruals.
• Update residential real estate loan database for loans that are subserviced by a 3rd party vendor (PHH). Prepare month-end loan journal entries including payments, interest accruals and payoffs for all residential real estate loans.
• Track and report activities on other real estate owned (OREO) and assets in process of liquidation.
• Prepare monthly closing entries on mortgage servicing rights, prepaid expense, and general accruals.
• Track and prepare monthly fixed asset accounting including annual physical inventory audit.
• Assist branch and operations personnel when needed with research, the preparation of general ledger reconciliations and the resolution of reconciling items.
• Perform timely reconciliations of balance sheet accounts for review and approval by management. Assist management in certifying branch’s and department’s general ledger reconciliations.
• Provide support in incoming and outgoing wire process using WireXchange.
• Serve as backup on daily and/or month-end investment accounting functions including timely reconciliations and general ledger journal posting.
• Serve as backup for posting journal entries on bi-weekly payroll file and/or manual corporate checks.
• Serve as backup for maintaining cashier’s check register with daily reconciliation. Work with branches and departments to ensure all voided checks and/or stop payment are handled timely and accurately.
• Support team with day-to-day operations and month-end close procedures.
• Work closely with management to continually improve accounting processes.
• Maintain and update procedure documentation for all functions performed.
• Assist in preparation of annual external audit schedules and other duties as assigned.
• Assist accounting personnel with problem resolution and train other staff members as assigned.
• Keep up-to-date on all applicable regulatory requirements to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
• Follow record retention guidelines as published by regulatory agencies and federal and state record retention laws. Ensure all accounting records and reports are well-maintained and filed timely.
• Adhere to company policy and procedure, complete annual compliance training, comply with business continuity and vendor management policy. These are crucial to the success of the organization and have regulatory compliance and/or safety and soundness for the sustainability of the credit union.
• Comply with all Anti Money Laundering laws such as the Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC and USA PATRIOT Act and all related policies and procedures including accurate Member/Customer Identification Program, member due diligence, accurate OFAC match processing, and reporting unusual activities and suspected fraud.
• Other duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Finance and 3-5 years directly related experience performing month closing procedures/financial reporting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in finance/accounting. Credit union or financial institution experience preferred.

 

TECHNOLOGY PROFICIENCY
To perform this job, the employee must possess applicable technology skills and demonstrated expertise. Strong spreadsheet, database, word processing and presentation software skills are required. Ability to learn new applications quickly and general knowledge of network and database usage is required.

 

To perform this job, the employee must possess strong interpersonal skills, good phone and e-mail etiquette, a professional presentation, and a high degree of personal initiative. Interpersonal skills including, but not limited to, motivating and influencing others, maintaining a significant level of trust and diplomacy, fostering internal and external business relationships. This position requires the employee to work during regular business hours and occasional nights or weekends as needed to meet established department deadlines.
