Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world. The company’s suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals. The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications. Astrobotic operated its first space mission in early 2024 flying Peregrine in space for 10 days proving many of the core flight systems needed for a successful lunar lander. Originally spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2007, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access that promises to spark a new era of exploration, science, tourism, resource utilization, and mining. Astrobotic’s headquarters is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a second location in Mojave, California.
Astrobotic Technology is seeking a Director of Engineering for our Landers & Spacecraft department to oversee and coordinate the daily operations of highly skilled engineering staff while ensuring that company objectives and goals are met. The Director of Engineering will report directly to the Vice President of Landers and Spacecraft.
Job Responsibilities:
- Establishes a strong engineering culture, excellent technology, high quality implementations and foster effective communications in and among the organization.
- Achieves quick and constructive resolutions of conflict and sets standards for design, verification, and documentation.
- Establishes long and short-term strategic goals for the engineering department.
- Leading the department’s personnel management, communicating job expectations, evaluating team structure, ensuring cohesive team culture, monitoring and evaluating employee performance.
- Recruiting, interviewing, and orienting new staff members, in coordination with the department’s managers and HR.
- Managing staffing needs including surge resource management, career planning and counseling, training, mentoring, and rewards/recognition.
- Ensures the engineering teams is equipped with the essential tactical tools in support of day-to-day operations.
- Champions the entire product engineering lifecycle: specifications, design, development, and verification.
- Drives engineering processes and identifies opportunities to improve processes for efficiency and effectiveness gains.
- Facilitates communication among engineering teams, ensuring specifications, budgets, and deadlines are clearly communicated and understood.
- Participates in technical decision making and takes a hands-on approach to understanding technical and design issues when necessary.
- Reviews work and projects for technical accuracy and mission success.
Required Qualifications:
- B.S. in Engineering plus 15 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more spaceflight disciplines such as: structure/thermal design and analysis, avionics, power systems, flight software, mission management, systems engineering, mission operations.
- Demonstrated experience identifying, selecting, and developing top talent.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams of 50+ employees.
- Demonstrated experience developing strategic plans and implementation plans.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with spacecraft, launch vehicles or other space systems.
- 10+ years of experience working with NASA, government, or commercial space programs.
- Excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.
- Highly detail oriented, diligent, and hard working.
- Passion for space and the development of the Moon.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven environment.
