SUMMARY DESCRIPTION AND SKILLS:
This position is part of our Star Dental team, who manufactures dental handpieces known for our collection and design of high and low-speed air-driven handpieces, electric systems and hygiene handpieces. The Tool & Die Maker role is an integral part of the team, as this role works with various departments to design, fabricate, and/or repair fixtures, tools, and gages needed for high-precision manufacturing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, fabricate, and/or repair fixtures, tools, and gages needed for high-precision manufacturing.
- Act as part of first-response team in production-down situations, lending product and manufacturing expertise to keep production flowing through the plant.
- Confer with engineering, production and other appropriate personnel to resolve design, material and method issues.
- Work with Engineering department to turn design concepts into working prototypes. Apply manufacturing expertise to create easy-to-manufacture products that meet true design requirements. Expected inputs include material selection, assembly method, and manufacturability based on geometry, tolerancing, and other factors.
- Set-up and operate standard and specialty equipment and attachments to turn, mill, drill, tap, grind, fit and finish workpiece. Modify standard tools as required.
- Use a wide range of precision instruments, gauges, equipment and devices to layout, scribe/mark and check work for functional and dimensional accuracy.
- Complete required work orders, records, requisitions and other paperwork within the required quality and time constraints.
- May perform other work as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum formal apprenticeship or five (5) years of equivalent training
- Strong knowledge of material properties and machinability (previous work with Titanium, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Brass, PEEK, and various plastics a plus)
- Basic machining skills required: Mills, Lathes, Grinding, Welding, CNC (ProtoTrak)
- Advanced machining skills and experience preferred: EDM/Wire EDM, Molding, Laser Welding, CAD software (Pro/E, SolidEdge)
- Must have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions
- Proficiency in using a personal computer, including Windows based applications
- Read, write, and verbally communicate in English
- Experience with Oracle, SAP, or similar inventory control system preferred
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to stand at machinery for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Must possess hand and eye coordination.
- Able to read and understand manufacturing drawings and specifications.
