Departmental Overview Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students (AVC/DOS) oversees all student life activities including the well-being, emotional, and safety of students. Graduate & Family Living is a part of the AVC/DOS portfolio. GFL provides critical services to 2500 residents in the family housing unit and approximately 1200 individual graduate students in four graduate student facilities. The GFL team serves as the primary contact for residents and family members in community engagement, wellness, conduct and community standards, critical incidents/emergency response, and safety/security concerns.

Responsibilities Supervision and Management:
- Provide direction and guidance to supervisees, including assistance on most complex and sensitive issues.
- Provide supervision, coaching, training, evaluation, and performance management for employees, as well as the design and supervision of professional development plans.
- Recommend hiring and separation of employees when appropriate.
- Conduct regular check-in meetings, staff meetings, and annual performance reviews; make merit recommendations and other recognitions.
- As chair of committees and/or project manager, provide guidance and feedback to staff who may not be direct reports and inform direct supervisors.
Programmatic and Community Development:
- Work with and coach direct reports and other staff to design innovative workshops, develop curricula, and instructional materials.
- Identify and implement innovative and time-tested strategies.
- Ensure staff design, develop, implement, deliver, and evaluate multi-format programs to enhance the learning and development processes of students and family members.
- Create direction, train, and advise on academic success and community development programs for each residential population.
- Ensure learning outcomes and program standards are met and responsive to each population's needs.
- Develop assessment processes for residential programs and activities.
- Use and share data to refresh and improve residential programs and activities on an ongoing basis.
- Recommend modifications to programs to enhance program effectiveness.
Partnerships:
- Establish and maintain partnerships with internal teams including Cal Housing, Facilities Management, Early Childhood Education Programs, and RecWell.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with broader campus and community organizations including Residential Education, Path to Care, Conduct and Community Standards, OPHD, Committee for Student Intervention, AVC/DOS team, Albany and Emeryville city partners, UCPD, and Student Affairs departments.
- Represent GFL on campus committees and work groups.
Crisis Management and Students of Concern:
- Consult with Community Directors (CDs) on assessing crisis situations and provide directions for action to be taken.
- Facilitate conversations with students, staff, administrators, and parents in crisis situations.
- Oversee conduct process for GFL, ensuring timely and thorough completion of conduct processes, including assignment of cases to CDs, consultation on outcomes and oversight of sanction completion.
- Participate in the "administrator-on-call" rotation to provide immediate consultative support to staff managing crisis interventions and resident mental health issues.
- Function as a Campus Security Authority under Clery Act and under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Act (CANRA) to report observed/suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults, and elders to designated law enforcement or social service agencies.
Leadership:
- Manage, coordinate, and recommend modification of departmental and multi-unit projects and programs in GFL designed to achieve specific goals and enhance program effectiveness (e.g., program administration, Village Resident Association, leadership support, Village-wide programs, campus/community partner collaborations).
- Chair committees and provide structure and direction to members of the group.
- Provide stewardship and strong risk management oversight of university resources.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of student development theories and practice.
- Knowledge of learning theories, advising, and counseling techniques.
- Advance oral and written communication skills.
- Advanced interpersonal skills and intercultural competence, including a demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
- Demonstrated experience in decision-making, problem solving, and organizational skills in a student life environment.
- Skills in monitoring/assessing processes or services to make improvements.
- Experience supervising, coaching, and evaluating professional staff.
- Knowledge of risk assessment principles and demonstrated experience in evaluating risk in a student life environment.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in several focus areas: counseling, crisis intervention, conflict mediation and de-escalation, student development theory, leadership development theory, child development theory, trauma-informed interactions, student conduct administration, programming, international population support, academic support programing, and safety and security programming.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years in professional work in campus residential life or equivalent experience.
- Professional experience with graduate student or nontraditional higher education populations.
Education/Training:
- Master's degree in counseling, higher education or student affairs and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $92,000,00 - $97,000.00.
- This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
