Summary/Objective:
The Hostler Driver is responsible for driving a truck, called a Hostling Tractor, which will move trailers and containers to and from the railroad trackside, to and from parking lots and dock areas.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Responsible for managing the movement of the container with chassis units and trailer units to and from the rail trackside, to and from parking lots and dock areas.
- Ability to verify unit initials and numbers accurately.
- Ensures accuracy when connecting and disconnecting air hoses each time a unit is moved.
- Examines all unit landing gear for damage to insure it is stable prior to moving.
- Maintain specific procedures when working with chassis and trailers to insure all safety protocols are followed.
- This role may also perform work with the Crane Operator assisting in locking and unlocking an intermodal unit.
- Responsible for the compliance under HAZMAT and OSHA Regulations. This would include reporting any incidents to the supervisory immediately. Hostler Drivers are required to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as safety vest, safety toe boots, safety glasses and protective hard hat, when applicable.
- Ensure clearances are met on all carriages of trailers and containers.
- May be responsible for locking and unlocking hitches on railroad flatcars’ inter-box connector (IBC’s) locks on all containers, as well as on all container chassis.
- Be aware of surroundings to maintain a safe and injury free work environment.
- Ability to follow clear communication, both written and verbal.
- When needed, may ensure that all hitches on container-on-chassis (COFC) and trailers (TOFC) that are loaded on flatcars or double state car units are secured safely. Use of electrical equipment is required to raise and lower hitches.
- Maintain company values, rules, policies and procedures are met to fulfill the company mission, as well as productive relationships with customers and vendors.
- Responsible for special tasks requested by management and/or supervisor.
- May provide lift equipment (if qualified) and/or ground person activities to compliment work conditions and volumes.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Valid Drivers License
- Advanced knowledge of railroad industry from a vocational education institute, apprenticeship, on the job training and/or similar work experience.
- Ability to listen, learn, take direction, make changes and work alone or in a group environment.
- Willing to work nights and weekends depending on shift
