Job description
Athens Academy is a co-educational, non-sectarian, independent college preparatory day school of approximately 900 students in grades K3-12 that offers a traditional liberal arts curriculum and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. The Middle School:
Recognizing that Middle School students are in a rapid mental, emotional, and physical growth stage of life, Athens Academy emphasizes responsibility, creativity, independent thinking, personal values, and service to others. Middle School students (grades 5-8), begin to master broader and more rigorous aspects of learning that include written expression, vocabulary, problem-solving, research, scientific investigation, and teamwork. An emphasis on critical and creative thinking runs throughout the curriculum. Opportunities for public speaking, performing, publication, and athletic competitions complement the challenging academic program. The Middle School is composed of approximately 300 students supported by 38 teachers and instructional support staff.
The Upper School:
Athens Academy’s Upper School (grades 9-12) is committed to providing a high-quality education that prepares students to lead successful and productive lives not only in their future academic pursuits in colleges and universities across the nation but also in their adult lives. The curricular structure challenges each student individually, while our diverse extra-curricular offerings provide students the opportunity to be involved in activities in which they are interested. Talented and tireless teachers enable us to produce young men and women capable of handling the 21st-century demands and challenges they will inevitably face.
The Position:
Athens Academy seeks a dynamic, creative, and versatile Middle and Upper School band teacher, beginning in August 2024. Essential characteristics include a love of children, energy, optimism, flexibility, the ability to work with others, a good sense of humor, and a firm foundation in music education. We are looking for someone excited to become a part of our community and who enjoys and understands middle and upper school learners. Furthermore, the ideal candidate should have a record of demonstrated success in instrumental music teaching and extensive knowledge and familiarity with a broad range of classic and contemporary band repertoire. The ability to lead and cultivate the Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble programs is required. The candidate must demonstrate enthusiastic support of music education and have the character to act as a positive role model and mentor for students. Additional position requirements may include supporting Middle and Upper School teams with activities ranging from car line and lunch duty to involvement in learning team meetings.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following areas:
Developing and building beginning and intermediate band programs in Middle School (grades 6?8)
Developing and building Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble programs in Upper School (grades 9?12)
Developing Middle and Upper School Band participation in a variety of extracurricular events including concerts, football games, and pep rallies; competitive local, regional, and state band events

Other Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Education (Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience preferred).
Instrumental band teaching experience in Middle School and Upper School and/or independent school experience preferred.
