Position Summary

The Center for Integrative Studies in General Science (CISGS) at Michigan State University is excited to invite applications for a dedicated educator to join our team to teach physical science courses to non-science majors and science education courses to secondary science education students in both lecture and laboratory settings. Michigan State University is committed to strategically increasing its capacity to provide national leadership in science education scholarship by building our long-standing record of excellence in scientific literacy, curriculum development, and research. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Our goal as related to this position is to continue to teach outstanding science courses for non-STEM undergraduate students in our Integrated Studies in Physical Science (ISP) lecture and lab programming and the preparation of secondary science education students in our Integrated Science Education (ISE) courses.

The initial appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2024, will be for one academic year (9 months) with the expectation of continuing renewal based on satisfactory performance. Current individuals in fixed term positions in CISGS have an average of 15 years in service. Responsibilities for this position include: 1) teaching ISP lecture courses, 2) teaching ISE lecture/lab courses, and 3) collaboratively developing curriculum for CISGS programming, specifically:

• Teach physical science courses for non-science majors, course preparation, and assessment.
• Teach integrated science education lecture and laboratory courses for secondary science education students.
• Foster an inclusive and welcoming lecture and laboratory classroom that respects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students.
• Develop and implement effective teaching strategies that engage students and support their learning and understanding of biological science concepts.
• Participate in departmental meetings, student mentoring, and other academic and administrative activities as required.

Required Degree

Masters -Physical science or science education.

Minimum Requirements

• Master's degree or higher in physical science, science education, or closely related field(s) is required.
• Experience using instructional technologies as curricular resources.
• Ability to collaborate in the development and improvement of student-centered curricular resources that include the competencies of scientific and quantitative literacy.
• Proven commitment to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and in the academic community.

Desired Qualifications

• Evidence of successful teaching experience in secondary or post-secondary education.
• Evidence of science teaching that incorporates three dimensional teaching and learning.
• Evidence of preparing and mentoring future science educators.
