DEAN OF THE SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY Kennesaw State University (KSU) is seeking a visionary, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as the next Dean of the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET). This is an exciting opportunity for a distinguished scholar and accomplished academic leader. The Dean will guide the College forward at a time of tremendous opportunities and growth. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief academic officer for the College and is responsible for setting the strategic, operational, and financial directions for the College. For more information, please visit the KSU ECE website at: Mechanical Engineering With over 1744 undergraduate and fifty-one graduate students, the mechanical engineering department is the largest department in the College and plays a pivotal role in actively serving our community. The department is the home of twenty-five nationally renowned full-time faculty members with diverse research interests, including smart materials, bioengineering, nanotechnology, soft robots, nuclear energy, and aerodynamics. While focusing on the application of the principles of mechanics and energy to design new-age technology, mechanical engineering offers students a foundation to begin their careers in an ever-changing environment. The Mechanical Engineering department offers a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s Degree , a Mechanical Engineering Master’s Degree , an Aerospace Engineering Minor, and a Nuclear Engineering Minor

SPCEET has both engineering and engineering technology programs to educate and shape various types of engineers. This range of degree programs sets SPCEET apart from other engineering programs in the state. SPCEET has great potential for growth in both meeting current and future workforce needs and in advancing the understanding of disciplines through its research activities. Internally, the College is an important partner for establishing collaborations with the other colleges. KSU is making an impact in the region and allows the new Dean the ability to leverage University assets to grow the influence of SPCEET both regionally and nationally.

Resource Development Resource development is a crucial component of the Dean's portfolio. SPCEET has identified initiatives that need funding, including but not limited to, supporting graduate programs, enhancing infrastructure, providing professional development for faculty, and online education. The Dean will invest significant time and energy on external development and on creating/enhancing the culture of grant proposal development and submission to support this goal. The new Dean will need to create a strong collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Research to increase research funding for the College. All KSU Deans are expected to identify and lead efforts to capitalize and grow non-tuition revenues. In October, the University embarked on The Campaign for Kennesaw State, the most ambitious comprehensive fundraising campaign in KSU’s history. With a target goal of $200 million, The Campaign encompasses all eleven colleges, KSU Athletics, Research and University Initiatives, and Student Affairs. The SPCEET goal for the campaign is $23MM and we are presently more than halfway to this goal. With enthusiasm and expertise, our next engineering dean will help lead us to achieve our goal by 2027 in partnership with the assigned SPCEET development officer. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE Role Responsibilities The Dean will play a leading role in propelling the College to become a prominent, nationally recognized, and world-class institution and will advance research, scholarly and creative activity within the College that are consistent with institutional initiatives. Shape and promote the mission of the College; Encourage and nurture collaborative and interdisciplinary relationships within SPCEET, the other colleges within KSU, and with other institutions and community partners; Cultivate and support significant growth in the research mission of the College and grow funded research by the strategic allocation of resources; Enhance student retention, progression, and graduation success; Lead in building relationships with donors, alumni and other constituencies; Serve and represent the College to all its constituents, including government agencies, with an understanding of the key challenges and issues regarding funding of public higher education. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of contemporary challenges in higher education; a passion for exploring new possibilities; and a successful record of accomplishment of advancing programs to new levels of excellence. The Dean will lead the expansion of cutting-edge interdisciplinary teaching and research and will foster collaboration with KSU's deans, faculty, and research partners. Required Qualifications Possess a terminal degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related discipline with a record of distinguished research, teaching and professional accomplishments commensurate with the rank of tenured full professor in an academic unit within College; A proven record of institutional leadership and demonstrated skills in strategic planning and implementation, fiscal management and data-informed decision making in a large organization; A record of contribution to the fields of engineering and/or engineering technology evidenced in publications, and securing and managing federal funded grants; A commitment to supporting innovation and interdisciplinary growth is essential, as is a record of valuing instructional excellence at all levels and supporting faculty and student research; Prior experience with public and private fundraising; Strong interpersonal and communication skills; An ability to effectively work within and outside the College and University, especially the ability to successfully connect with potential donors and build partnerships with community leaders; Significant experience in developing policies and infrastructure to support research growth and implement strategies that results in college-wide increase in research funding and scholarly products; Knowledge of the primary fields and current trends in engineering and engineering technology; An understanding of the challenges and key issues confronting undergraduate and graduate education today with experience in implementing strategies that enhance students success; A record of excellence in problem solving, management, building consensus, political savvy, decision making and establishing synergistic partnerships; An ability to grow and expand the master’s and Ph.D program; Experience in recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty; Experience with the ABET accreditation process; Experience supporting the success of large and diverse departments; Commitment shared governance and the ability to be effective in a decision-making model that involves faculty, staff, students, and administrators in shaping policies and procedures.
