Job description
This position directs the operation of the Respiratory Care, Bronchoscopy Lab and Pulmonary Function Lab to assure therapy performance in keeping with the standard and the specific requirements of the hospital. Responsible for the day-to-day decisions involved in operating these departments, which includes quality assurance monitoring, purchasing, budgeting, personnel selection and management, inventory control, and development and implementation of new and on-going programs. Is responsible for clinical guidance, leadership, and competence of the Respiratory staff in Midland. Coordinates respiratory student’s activities in the hospital setting.
(25%)* Assures that all procedures are performed in accordance with currently recognized therapeutic practices in a competent and professional manner. Develops, maintains and refines patient driven protocols according to best practices.
(25%)* Prepares the annual department budget. Maintains financial and statistical data to generate monthly variance reports and quality assurance reports. Remains conscious of cost and duty to organize departmental work efficiently and economically. Collaborate with system educator to develop education plan for the department. Review and be familiar with current trends, problems, and issues impacting Respiratory Care, both locally and globally. Plan and develop educational experiences and/or competencies to address these issues.
(25%)* Is responsible for the performance of all staff. Directs monthly department meetings and provides periodic in-servicing to departmental personnel. Schedules all personnel for participation in all appropriate education programs. Coordinates clinical rotations for respiratory therapy students and provides educational opportunities to all school affiliates.
(25%)* Establishes and maintains good rapport with all attending physicians and consulting physicians, as well as all medical center departments and personnel. Develops, provides and maintains educational programs for the staff, patients, family of the patient and the community we serve. Develop and implement CEU opportunities, departmental competencies and annual competencies.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides instruction for department staff and hospital personnel in Respiratory procedures. Maintains adequate inventory and supplies. Assures that all equipment is cleaned, sterilized, serviced and in good repair at all times. Writes and revises departmental policy and procedure manual. Performs and completes special projects in addition to routine work assignments, as needed or assigned by Director. Carries out all Respiratory Care modalities according to orders and protocol, as needed. Maintains quality control and management of the blood gas laboratory. Coordinates the "Respiratory Resource Pool" for the health system. MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft® Windows. RT - Licensed Respiratory Therapist Required
Equivalent Experience - Required to maintain CEU's for license
BLS - Basic Life Support within 1 month of hire or transfer
Bachelors Degree
Comments: Bachelor's degree in healthcare Related Field. May be enrolled in bachelor's degree program with expected completion within 1 year of hire. Two to three years clinical experience and three years or supervisory experience in a medical center.
Two (2) to three (3) years clinical experience and three (3) year supervisory experience in medical center or similar setting required. Organizational and management skills needed to effectively direct a group. Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner. Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing as required by employee health Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
