Responsibilities
POSITION PURPOSE : To provide 24-hour responsibility for the management of the unit. Monitors and assesses nursing care for adults (ages 18+). Primary purpose and responsibilities are utilization of the nursing process to deliver quality patient care, assessment of the delivery of patient care, and provision of direction and guidance to staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Coordinates with the Director of Staff and Nurse Recruitment to interview and recommend hire all licensed staff and Mental Health Workers (MHW's) needed for unit functioning.
- Provides clinical and administrative supervision, leadership and direction to MHW's, LVN's, and RN's.
- Maintains high standards of professional work ethic with staff members.
- Continually assesses the educational needs of staff members in the delivery of patient care.
- Identifies areas of ongoing performance improvement opportunities, active participant in the facility Performance Improvement Committee.
- Ensures quality programming for patients.
- Provides clinical and administrative support for unit staff. Serves as a resource for staff during medical and psychiatric emergencies. Provides direction in crisis situations. Reviews and monitors the use of restraint/seclusion.
- Ensures that interdisciplinary treatment planning occurs.
- Clinically privileged through medical staff to assess the need for seclusion and restraint.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Through knowledge of appropriate nursing assessment, diagnosis, and intervention with psychiatric patients. Ability to accurately administer medication and monitor side effects. Through knowledge of milieu management. Ability to delegate responsibility to other staff and monitor their performance. Ability to safely implement special treatment procedures. Skill in developing therapeutic relationships with adults, children, adolescents and their families. Skill in preparing and maintaining appropriate medical record documentation.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Current Texas State Registered Nurse license. Current Texas Driver's license, CPR/CPI Certification.
EXPERIENCE: Nursing experience preferred in the field of Mental Health Nursing. Prior supervisory experience preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Full range of body motion including handing and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination, and ability to run.
* Ability to assist restraining patients.
* Lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
* Vision and hearing must be correctable to normal range.
* Must be able to verbally communicate.
* Requires fine manipulation with both hands.
* Must be in good physical condition and mobility.
* Hearing and vision sufficient to perform essential functions.
* Emotional stability necessary to perform essential functions.
* Must be able to speak clearly and write.
