Position overview
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position: . The current base salary range for this position is $71,500-$91,000. 'Off-scale' salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published systemwide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Spring/Summer 2024

Position duration: The initial appointment is for 16 months with a possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding.

Position description

The Arkin Lab, as part of the CUBES program, in the QB3 Institute at the University of California, Berkeley seeks personnel to help develop innovative approaches to build on our recent successes engineering the cyanobacterial superfood', Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) for production of pharmaceutical, nutrients, and flavors with application to supporting human exploration of space. We are looking for innovative ways to further improve the efficiency of engineering of this previously recalcitrant organism and determine the best routes for metabolic engineering of these critical products.

Responsibilities:

• Develop new approaches to improve the efficiency of engineering of this filamentous microbe.
  
• Design, build, test, and learn pathways for the production of target chemicals from this platform
  
• Develop robotic automation protocols and tools for enhanced research productivity.
  
• Develop research programs that lead to continued funding. To accomplish this goal, the candidate is expected to present his/her research at international conferences and to publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  
• Supervise a small group of undergraduates where appropriate.
  
• Collaborate and develop strong working relations with relevant CUBES and Arkin Lab teams on experimental design, data analysis, and long-term project planning.

  Qualifications
  Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.
  Preferred qualifications
  • PhD in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects and in corresponding with scientific collaborators.
  • Demonstrated success in the publication of high-impact work in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with a diverse group of scientific and technical personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
