The primary focus of this role is to support Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) as the Associate Director, Water/Wastewater Compliance and Strategy within the Environmental Center of Excellence. The individual in this role will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and sustaining strategic water compliance programs and initiatives to drive best in class stewardship in our operational and capital project activities while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations and alignment with the BMS standards.
The position will proactively inform leadership of upcoming regulatory impacts, monitor water compliance risks, and collaborate with the cross functional teams to achieve corporate and Environmental, Occupational Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EOHSS) goals. This position plays a key role in the Global Environmental Center of Excellence and reports to the Director, Water Quality and Due Diligence within the Environmental Center of Excellence (E-CoE).
Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Develop and maintain knowledge of current and evolving regulatory programs in geographies where BMS operates to support a sustainable water compliance program.
Periodic review and update of existing EOHSS standards to align with global regulations and industry good practices.
Review and provide technical support for water-related permits (e.g., supply, wastewater discharge, storm water discharge), use/discharge reports, and other water-related documents. Interact with agencies as needed.
Track regulatory actions, actively engage with industry groups and agencies to create meaningful regulations, legislation, and guidance documents.
Develop understanding of total water footprint for each BMS facility and expand this knowledge base to include context of water risk within the regions/watersheds where we operate. Use the resulting knowledge to inform strategy on internal and/or external projects to improve reliable and affordable access to clean water for BMS and our Patients.
Support investigation, reporting, and corrective and preventative action development/implementation for water-related environmental incidents.
Assist BMS Facilities implementing EOHSS Standards and Global Engineering Design Standards by leveraging the Facility Self-Assessment Program (FSAP) and Capital Project review process.
Support Pharmaceutical Discharge Assessment Program (PDAP) evaluations to quantify potential active pharmaceutical ingredient discharge to the environment via wastewater at internal and external manufacturing facilities. Evaluate mitigation strategies, including potential treatment systems, as necessary.
Create tools and training programs to assist Facilities with water supply, wastewater, and storm water compliance.
Standardize and improve processes to track water use and wastewater discharge metrics in the electronic EHS management system for reporting purposes.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering.
Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years regulatory compliance experience with an emphasis on water management.
Demonstrated technical knowledge of global water supply, wastewater discharge, and storm water management requirements.
Demonstrated knowledge working with Capital project teams.
Highly skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and EHS systems like ENABLON (or similar).
Ability to proactively identify potential EOHSS risks, early in capital project recognition/planning phases, and work collaboratively with Facility and Engineering teammates to develop and incorporate mitigation strategies to effectively reduce overall number of environmental incidents and associated corrective actions.
Typical daily activities are within the office environment with 40% travel to manufacturing facilities as needed, industry and/or Agency meetings. Outdoor work may be required at times.
