This position is based on-site in Cambridge, MA and will not have the ability to be located remotely.

About the role:
As Manager of Lab Operations for Translational Medicine (TM) - Cambridge, you will be responsible for all local lab-related operations for the Preclinical Safety, Pharmacokinetic Sciences and Biomarker Development departments in TM. We are seeking a highly motivated, hands-on lab manager to help support the dynamic operations of a large research department at Novartis. The successful candidate must be a collaborative teammate who is engaged, organized, self-directed, and capable of handling a variety of tasks in a global and highly matrixed environment with a proven track record of taking initiative to deliver business solutions. A willingness to infuse creativity and continuous improvement into operational tasks is strongly desired. Your role will involve ensuring the highest standards of operational excellence, fostering collaboration, and providing input on strategic projects with local and global lab operations experts, and effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders.

Your main responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

• Providing local, hands-on day-to-day laboratory operational support to TM Preclinical Safety, Pharmacokinetic Sciences, and Biomarker Development departments
• Establishing and maintaining relationships with TM researchers and the Novartis Biomedical Research Operations community to ensure alignment and execution of departmental and enterprise objectives.
• Ensuring effective and efficient maintenance and documentation of lab assets and consumables in alignment with TM scientific goals
• Working with TM lab scientists to ensure full compliance with Health Safety & Environment (HSE) rules; may serve as department HSE representative. Act as champion for new HSE initiatives, e.g. sustainability best practices
• May be responsible for space management and planning
• May manage budget for lab-related assets including complex integrated systems, e.g. CapEx, LVA, materials and services, infrastructure, 3rd-party services.
• Strategic operational support: Strong focus on providing input and contributing to operational excellence initiatives, planning, monitoring, and documenting of projects and analysis of information. Active participation in and championing of cross-departmental initiatives and collaborations
• Collaboration and communication: Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including lab scientists, 3rd-party vendors, technicians, and Novartis supporting functions including Health, Safety & Environment, Facilities and Real Estate, IT, Procurement, and Finance. Communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Fostering a culture of collaboration, operational excellence, and continuous improvement within the team.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $124,000 - $186,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Role Requirements

Essential Requirements:
• A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences or a related field with minimum of 5 years of hands-on laboratory experience.
• In addition, 3-5+ years of experience in an academic, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical laboratory specifically with hands-on lab operations a must.
• A strong understanding of lab processes, equipment, and infrastructure required in a scientific research organization
• Demonstrated ability to identify inefficiencies/challenges and develop practical solutions to improve efficiency and quality
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
• Highly efficient, self-motivated, independent, and flexible in adapting to changing priorities; eager to take on additional responsibilities when required; able to work collaboratively on several projects simultaneously while meeting timelines.
• Keen interest and capability in developing and maintaining strong relationships across diverse research groups and with supporting departments. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
• Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook are required.

Desirable Requirements:
• Project Management experience a plus
• Experience with SharePoint and Teams is preferred.
