Assistant Professor of Marine Science

St. Mary's College of Maryland

Location

Maryland | United States

Job description

St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Marine Science beginning August 2024. Candidates who are interested in nurturing a newly established undergraduate program are encouraged to apply. Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Marine Science, Marine Science Senior Capstone, either Biological or Physical Oceanography, and marine science elective courses in your area of expertise. We especially seek candidates with strong quantitative skills whose elective courses would also support SMCM’s Data Science program. In addition to teaching, faculty at SMCM are expected to develop an active, undergraduate-focused research program. An interest in and ability to offer hands-on student research opportunities and learning experiences that take advantage of our waterfront location on the Chesapeake Bay and our expanding marine science infrastructure, including a 46-foot research vessel, several center console boats, a wet-lab with flow-through river water, a newly renovated teaching lab, and an array of shared scientific instrumentation will also be an advantage. By start of contract, candidates must have completed a PhD in Marine Science, Oceanography, or related scientific field. We value course-based research opportunities and other high impact practices you can bring to SMCM. Successful candidates will have knowledge of ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in marine science and ideas about how best to cultivate a just and inclusive learning and working environment.

Non-sectarian since its founding, St. Mary's College of Maryland, a public Carnegie Baccalaureate, Arts and Sciences institution located in St. Mary’s City, 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., has been designated as Maryland's public honors college. With highly selective admissions policies, academically talented students, and a rigorous curriculum, we offer a small college experience similar to that found at exceptional private colleges. St. Mary’s faculty benefit from a comprehensive program of support for scholarship, research, travel, and curriculum development, including course releases for pre-tenure faculty and leaves for tenured faculty. The quality of life is enhanced by the recreational opportunities of the Chesapeake region and by our proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland (www.smcm.edu) embodies diversity and inclusion in its mission. We create an environment that recognizes the value of individual and group differences and we  encourage inquiries from applicants who will contribute to our cultural and ethnic diversity. Application materials should include a cover letter in which candidate addresses how his/her teaching will contribute to an inclusive classroom, curriculum vitae (including e-mail address), statement of teaching philosophy, statement of research interests, and evidence of teaching effectiveness (if available).  In support of inclusive hiring practices, for all SMCM faculty searches initiated after February 15, 2023,  the College will request three professional references (rather than letters of recommendation) at the time of application. Of these three references, at least one should speak to the candidate's disciplinary expertise and at least one should have seen the candidate deliver or design classroom instruction. References will be contacted only for candidates who advance to finalist interviews. Applications are being accepted online at: apply.interfolio.com/124685. Questions may be directed to: Associate Professor Elka Porter or visit www.smcm.edu/marine-science/.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check. St. Mary’s College of Maryland is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
