Job description
Position Summary:
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking an Accounting Specialist for the University Controller's Office. Reporting to a Senior Accountant Supervisor this position is primarily responsible for processing and controlling University Petty Cash, Travel/Cash Advances issued to University faculty and staff, and performing account reconciliations.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Manages Petty Cash accounts ensuring compliance with established procedures for appropriate fund use and opens new accounts.
- Oversees the workflow and processing of Travel/Cash Advances in the Expense Management System, reviewing supporting documentation for adherence to relevant University policies.
- Deposits and records checks received from the State of New Jersey and other sources to a cash clearing account, facilitating research and allocation to the appropriate University department.
- Prepares general ledger balance sheet account reconciliations monthly, addressing outstanding items, and executing timely actions such as tracking, notifications, and preparing journal entry adjustments.
- Provides assistance on various projects, such as ongoing process improvement initiatives, year-end analytical reviews and reporting, assistance with internal/external audit requests as needed, and other general accounting functions.
- Works independently under general supervision, executing routine and non-routine tasks with occasional review of work outputs by a supervisor.
- Performs professional work requiring knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ), and a comprehensive understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and applied bases of accounting.
- Communicates with faculty and staff in various functional departments across the University, and external parties in a courteous and professional manner.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree preferably in accounting, finance, business administration or related field.
- A minimum of two years' relevant experience in a financial/accounting function.
