Supervisor: Dr. Adolfo Cuevas
Employment Dates: This position will run for eight months - March 1, 2024 - November 30, 2024
Supported by the Biosocial Research Initiative at NYU School of Global Public Health
The Biosocial Research Initiative at New York University's School of Global Public Health is rapidly becoming an important leader in health equity research, applying a multidisciplinary approach to examine the ways in which psychosocial determinants, including racism and discrimination, increase the risk of aging-related diseases. Under the guidance of Principal Investigator Adolfo Cuevas, PhD, our team is expanding, and we are actively seeking a self-motivated, inquisitive, and collaborative Postdoctoral Associate to contribute to our upcoming research program.
This position is a key role within a newly funded NIH R01 project, focusing on advancing our understanding of the impact of neighborhood and interpersonal discrimination on allostatic load across the life course. The project will also examine the molecular pathways underlying these relationships and investigate how social integration may serve as a mitigating factor for the impact of discrimination on health.
The Postdoctoral Associate will primarily work with established prospective cohort studies, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), Midlife in the United States (MIDUS), and Health and Retirement Study (HRS). These datasets capture various life course stages and provide rich psychosocial and biomarker data. Expertise in longitudinal analyses, multilevel analyses, mediation, and moderation analyses will be critical as the Postdoctoral Associate leads data management, conducts statistical analyses, and contributes to the development of manuscripts and scientific reports.
Joining the team at NYU, the Postdoctoral Associate will collaborate with renowned researchers from institutions such as the University of California, Los Angeles, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Harvard University, and Columbia University. This role also opens the door for collaboration with scholars at the Center for Anti-racism, Social Justice, and Public Health, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful and socially relevant research.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Adolfo Cuevas, the Postdoctoral Associate will receive professional development training, including 1) developing a career-development grant, 2) writing and submitting NIH grants, 3) participating in professional development opportunities (e.g., attending MIDUS workshops, and presenting research at national and international conferences).
Key Responsibilities:
Organize and manage population-level datasets.
Apply advanced statistical techniques, such as mixed-effects models, to analyze longitudinal data.
Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, serving as both first and second author. Additionally, present research findings at conferences and seminars.
Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including biostatisticians, health policy experts, psychologists, sociologists, and epidemiologists.
Facilitate research team meetings to ensure deadlines are met and provide feedback on results and manuscripts.
Identify additional datasets or collaborate with researchers possessing related datasets to enable replication and expansion of primary analyses.
Assist the Principal Investigator in developing investigator-initiated grant proposals.
Oversee, conduct, and assist with systematic literature reviews of epidemiologic studies on discrimination and biological markers.
Take the lead in relevant papers using the project's datasets or similar datasets to address pertinent research questions.
Applications will be reviewed immediately, and the position will remain open until filled.
Review of applications for this position will be conducted on a rolling basis until filled;
Applicants are encouraged to submit early with a projected start date March 1, 2024. This appointment will be for eight (8) months; March1, 2024 - November 30, 2024.
