POSITION DESCRIPTION
Temporary Full-Time
Non-Exempt-Hourly
Seasonal: April 2024 through December 2024
Compensation: $25.00 per hour
The Cultural Conservancy’s Land Stewardship program work on our two land bases Heron Shadow and Indian Valley Organic Farm & Garden (IVOF&G), is critical to the mission and vision of our organization as a whole. Through our land tending, we serve urban Intertribal and California Native communities, farmers and land stewards of the greater San Francisco Bay Area, as well as Native farmers, farming communities, and Native food gatherers across Turtle Island.
The Native Foodways Seasonal Farmer is a Temporary Full-Time Position that supports the Farm Manager in TCC’s agricultural work and supports community engagement with the Native Foodways Program. This position reports directly to the Farm Manager and works in close partnership with the Land Manager and the Native Foodways Program Manager in supporting the vision and mission of TCC’s land stewardship work and the Native Foodways Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE
Farm Field Work
- Seeding & propagation, transplanting, raised bed creation and preparation, composting, weeding, harvesting, washing & packing produce, irrigation installation and repair, tool maintenance, and other farm-related tasks
Land Stewardship
- Brush clearing, native plant pruning, swale digging, tree felling and wood chipping, small equipment operation, infrastructure installation, and other land-based tasks
Supporting Farm Systems and Activities
- Including cleaning and organization, field data logs and inventory, onsite workshops, volunteer days, and community events
- Supporting the maintenance of the Native Seed Library, through selective seedkeeping,seed cleaning and packing, organization
- Supporting the delivery of food, seeds, and plants to community partner organizations
- On occasion, conducting research for educational outreach and farm projects
Recordkeeping
- The timely submission of reports and timesheets need to be consistently submitted ontime, as requested
Skills & Experience
- 2+ years of direct farming experience
- Working knowledge of regenerative agricultural production practices as well as experience in and/or awareness of traditional Indigenous tending practices, helpful but not required
- Understanding of and commitment to Indigenous issues of food justice, ecocultural health and healing, and revitalization of traditional learning spaces
- Excellent interpersonal skills, respectful and collaborative communication style, with a desire to work in a team-oriented environment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and comfortable doing physical tasks and standing for long hours in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Adaptability and flexibility; ability to navigate in a rapidly growing organization and constantly evolving work environment
- Excellent strategic, critical, and creative thinking skills and problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite
Eligibility
- Reliable personal transportation to travel between work sites
- Current and valid CDL and proof of auto insurance
- Readiness to walk, drive, lift and perform moderate work that includes moving, lifting, pushing, pulling up to 50 pounds, and working in outdoor elements.
- Available for weekend community events when needed
Location, Compensation and Schedule
- Work will be divided between our land base at Heron Shadow in Graton, CA and the Indian Valley Organic Farm & Garden (IVC) in Novato, CA.
- Must have access to a car in order to travel between two work sites and occasional community food deliveries.
- Temporary, full-time, non-exempt
- Schedule: 40 hours per week (April 2024-December 2024)
- Compensation: $25/hour
- Insurance, benefits, and mileage reimbursement for work related travel to our other work locations and food deliveries
