Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD)

The Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD), within the University of Illinois' School of Social Work is a vibrant applied research center that has been in operation for 30 years. CPRD has a stable $3.5 million-dollar annual portfolio of grants in youth substance use prevention, maternal and early childhood health, health care for vulnerable populations, juvenile justice reform, and teen pregnancy prevention. We work with meaningful data that has applications for the field and for impacting policy. CPRD invests in its staff with actions and policies to support professional development and ongoing learning and growth opportunities.

Job Summary
The Research Data Specialist (RDS) for the Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD), within the University of Illinois' School of Social Work, works on research teams that evaluate youth substance use prevention projects, maternal and childhood health projects, and teen pregnancy prevention projects. The RDS is responsible for preparing large datasets for statistical analysis, combining and matching data from a variety of sources, performing and interpreting statistical data analysis, and coordinating project activities. The ideal candidate will have experience in an applied research setting as well as statistical analyses on large datasets. Hybrid work arrangement for position will be considered based on skills and experience.
Duties & Responsibilities

Dataset Creation and Manipulation

• Create and manipulate data sets, including large state and national datasets, for various evaluation designs.

• Implement pre-determined rules to code data, create data dictionaries, and interpret data dictionaries.

• Use SAS, SPSS, Stata, R, or other statistical software to read in/set up data files, clean and merge datasets from paper surveys, online surveys, or from other sources, restructure and reformat data sets, run automated analysis and reporting systems, and design/write/test/maintain complex programs and for advanced statistical models.

• Develop functions, macros, templates, and other utilities for creating code for data cleaning and reporting.

• Develop syntax in statistical software to construct and calculate variables.
  Research Analysis and Statistics

• Recommend, review, and assist in the development of appropriate statistical analyses, data analysis plans, and research questions based on project needs.

• Clean and combine data, including merging files, re-coding variables, addressing missing data, and ensuring files are prepared for research analyses.

• Perform basic descriptive statistics, including means, medians, frequencies, chi-square, correlations, crosstabs, and ANOVA.

• Collaborate with other Research Data Specialists at CPRD to serve as a peer support system for problem-solving and quality assurance of research projects.
  Research Documentation, Report Generation, and Interpretation

• Translate research data output into text, bullet points, tables/graphs/charts, and/or annual reports using APA style and/or other standard style guidelines.

• Clearly document all research procedures and analyses.

• Design and interpret data reports from all relevant systems and distribute them to meet the project needs.

• Effectively communicate research data analytic procedures and results to other researchers, funders, and partners.

• Follow internal CPRD protocols and communicate project or center-wide system weaknesses and solutions in a timely manner.

• Assist in preparing surveys, reports, and research publications for the project.
  Project Coordination

• Coordinate project activities.

• Develop and monitor project timelines for meeting all project deliverables.

• Partner with team members to achieve project goals and objectives.

• Collaborate with University partners and external partners.

• Other duties and responsibilities appropriate for the Research Data Specialist
  
  • Assists in special assignments and operational needs as directed by supervisor.
  Minimum Qualifications
  Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Information Management, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, Sociology, or related behavioral science. Two years of work experience preparing data and conducting statistical analyses.
  Preferred Qualifications
  Master's degree in Statistics, Informational Management, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, Sociology, or related behavioral science. At least one year of experience analyzing data in survey settings, health care, public health or in other discipline utilizing any statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, or R.
  Knowledgeable in advanced statistical techniques, including Propensity Score Matching, Interrupted Time Series Designs, Difference-in-Difference Design, MLM/HLM, Mediation/Moderation models, Resampling/Bootstrapping techniques, GEE, and/or Advanced Survey Sampling.
  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  Ability to use SPSS, SAS, Stata, or R statistical software. Experience analyzing survey research or similar data. Knowledge of statistical methods and ability to articulate the associated findings. Equally capable of working in a team environment and working individually. Ability to articulate steps in a process (logic in thinking). Knowledgeable about working in an applied research setting. Knowledgeable about working with diverse populations and cultures. Excellent and demonstrated interpersonal, time management, communication, coordination, organizational, and solution-focused skills.
  Appointment Information
  This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search posting closes. Hybrid work may be considered for this position. The minimum of the salary range for this position is $52,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
