Position Overview

• Field Office Locations: Logan, Cedar City, Moab, Utah
• Term of Service Dates: Winter 2022 – Fall 2023 (flexible start/end date)
• Schedule: Full-time commitment, hours & schedules vary from week to week. Approximately 50% time in the field; 50% time in the field office. Percentages are general and are subject to change based on office and field needs throughout the year.

The UCC Field Logistics Technician (FLT) provides leadership, support to multiple field crews, and assistance to field staff in seasonal trainings and logistical coordination. The FLT ensures that field crews are prepared to perform high-quality conservation service in a positive, safe, and productive environment. Support of field crews and operations may include (but is not limited to):

• Working with crews at their project sites
• Assisting with training crew leaders and members
• Performing project site visits, managing logistics for crews
• Maintaining tools and equipment
• Data entry and administrative tasks in the field office
• Assisting with crew member recruitment efforts
• Developing positive, lasting relationships with project partners

The FLT term of service is approximately 10 months, spanning 3 field seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall). This position involves frequent travel, camping, irregular hours, and a varying weekly schedule. The FLT must
have strong leadership and communication skills, flexibility, capacity for self-direction, a passion for conservation work, and a desire to provide mentorship to emerging conservation leaders.

Projects & Schedule

UCC operates three 12-week field seasons throughout the year. The FLT begins their term of service in the early spring. The spring season is dedicated to the development of Crew Leaders through formal training and peer-led project work. During this time, FLTs become familiar with their responsibilities and assist regional staff with preparation for spring training. FLTs will participate in the Crew Leaders’ training period, including supervising field crews for the remainder of the spring season (March – May).

During our summer and fall field seasons, FLTs assist field staff with logistical coordination and support field crews. Field projects may be backcountry (hiking into the project site, camping away from a vehicle) or front country (driving to the project site daily, camping at the vehicle, or the possibility of non-camping accommodations provided). Projects may be urban (located in a city or town) or rural (located in national parks, forests, etc. with limited access to facilities and resources). Project work will vary due to seasonality and environmental safety concerns. Projects may include (but are not limited to):

• Trail construction and maintenance
• Invasive species management, including herbicide application
• Habitat restoration
• Fence installation/repair
• Land management inventory and mapping
• Fire fuels reduction
• National disaster response efforts
• Community service
• Recreation and facilities maintenance and construction
• Recreation signage repair

Every crew will have unique projects and travel schedules. Generally, crews work a 9-day or 4-day,10-hours/day (some days may be up to 12 hours/day) ‘hitch’ schedule, while camping in front and backcountry settings. Typically, crews will have 3-5 days off between hitches. Crews should expect project schedules and project work to vary. Days will include two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch.

FLTs may or may not be on a typical ‘hitch’ schedule as outlined above. The FLT schedule is highly variable depending on the field office and the project’s needs. This position is an AmeriCorps term requiring a full-time, ten-month commitment.

Responsibilities

Field Crew Support

• Provides technical, logistical, and administrative support to field crews
• Supports field crews with training, guidance, and constructive feedback
• Serves as a role model, resource, mediator, and advisor for field crews
• Cultivates a supportive learning environment for Crew Leaders and Crew Members
• Assists field staff with written mid-term and final evaluations for Crew Leaders
• Conducts regular risk management audits in the field
• Ensures compliance with UCC protocols and procedures, and enforces policies
• Participates in weekly check-in calls from crews in the field
• Oversees and/or supervises the rig-up (pre-hitch) and de-rig (post-hitch) of crews at the field office
• Acts as a temporary crew leader, as needed
• Communicates tool and equipment needs to UCC field staff
• Helps with maintenance and inventory of hand tools, chain saws, brush cutters, micro blasters, camp equipment, and more

Training Assistance

• Assists with seasonal crew training sessions and provides ongoing training in the field during each field season. Topics may include (but are not limited to):
  • Trail maintenance & construction
  • Proper tool use & maintenance
  • Pre-project planning & organization
  • Chainsaw training
  • Crew Leader development
  • Rig-up and de-rig procedures
  • Vehicle inspections and maintenance
  • Herbicide: safety, use, and storage
  • Outdoor living skills

Projects and Partnerships Development

• Under the supervision of regional staff, attend site visits and discuss current and future project assignments with project partners
• Assist field staff with project planning through communication with project partners

Requirements

Minimum

• Trail maintenance and construction experience
• Chainsaw training and experience
• Experience with group communication, conflict management & resolution skills
• Maturity & professionalism in an environment with irregular and changing schedules
• Self-motivated with a commitment to personal and professional growth
• Alignment to UCC’s mission and values of safety, service, community, inclusivity, positivity, and commitment
• U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Eligible to enroll in an AmeriCorps term of service
• Agree to undergo a National Criminal History Check
• 6 months minimum leadership or supervisory experience in a team or crew-based setting
• Demonstrated outdoor/camping skills (guiding, conservation work, front country/backcountry skills – volunteer/informal/formal)

Preferred

• 6 months experience in conservation corps, public lands management, or work in similar fields
• Employ effective communication with all levels of UCC members, staff, and administration
