Job Summary:

Plans, organizes, and manages the effort of Mary Kay Inc.'s Product Development staff in the development of products from the conceptual stages through production to ensure products are safe, stable, reproducible, marketable, and cost-effective.

About the Role:

• Plans, organizes, and manages staff resources for all new product development, product reformulation, and ingredient qualification project activities from the conceptual stage through production. Guides staff to ensure that an aesthetically pleasing, safe, stable, microbiologically robust, and cost-effective product can be prepared and reproduced on a large scale, is formulated and tested within the time frames and budgetary constraints established for the project through the optimum utilization of manpower, facilities, and equipment.


• In conjunction with senior management, develops short- and long-term plans for product development. Provides input into the global planning process regarding market trends, new products from competitors in both domestic and international markets, anticipated technological changes in the chemistry of raw materials, advances in cosmetic formulation research, anticipated changes in product safety regulations, and the potential impact of these trends, advances, and changes on new and existing Mary Kay Inc. products. Manages the process of identifying the manpower, equipment, and materials required to develop a proposed product, and manages cost estimates associated with the development of products. Ensures the technical and economic feasibility of a project. Develops recommendations and justifications for fiscal year capital and operating budgets, and monitors actual versus budgeted expenses.


• Interfaces with management and outside suppliers in planning, initiating, troubleshooting, and following through on Mary Kay Inc. product development projects. Ensures that staff effectively communicates with Brand Development on product efficacy, performance, and aesthetic issues before and during the formulation process and with other areas within Research & Development, Packaging Quality Engineering and Operations to resolve scale-up, stability, packaging compatibility, safety, and quality issues. Interfaces with Brand Development on conceptualizing new products and provides formulation expertise and knowledge to other departments. Manages the department's interaction with suppliers to obtain information on the availability, quality and safety of raw materials, and to assess capabilities for manufacturing proposed new products.


• Ensures qualified staffing is available to effectively fulfill the mission of the department. Selects, trains, motivates, supervises, appraises, counsels and, if necessary, terminates assigned personnel. Structures staff responsibilities and assignments to emphasize teamwork in the achievement of objectives. Ensures that personnel actions comply with Company policies and procedures as well as safety procedures.


• Keeps current with advancements in the cosmetic industry and product formulations, raw materials developments, production technologies, safety, quality issues, and government regulations by representing Mary Kay Inc. at various scientific meetings and by interacting with peers and professional groups outside the Company.


• Prepares annual preliminary operating and capital budgets, and staff headcount. Assesses staff skills and supervises allocation of departmental headcount.

• This job requires on-site work at a Mary Kay facility.

Skills & Experience:

Education: Bachelor/University Degree in science


Experience: 7+ years years of experience in the cosmetic research and product development industry and three years of supervisory experience

Additional Skills & Abilities

• Excellent communication skills required to interface with other departments and to communicate effectively with the independent sales force.


• Must possess leadership abilities in order to manage department, provide guidance and direction to staff, and to develop and motivate employees to reach goals and objectives.


• Must have the ability to understand business needs and strategically plan the most cost-effective solution to goals and objectives.


• Occasional domestic and international travel may be required in order to gather information regarding market and competitor trends, to assess materials and outside contract services, and to attend professional meetings.
