Job Summary

UT Southwestern is in search of a Facilities Mechanical Engineer for their Utilities and Energy Management department. The Mechanical Engineer works under moderate supervision to provide professional engineering skills for planning, designing, construction, remodeling, and major repair of UT Southwestern Medical Center buildings to include mechanical, electrical, and plumbing documentation.

This position oversees and trains the crew responsible for maintaining and managing HVAC system for the Campus, including ensuring proper and reliable operation of the thermal energy plants and obtaining data for emission inventory. Monitors day-to-day operations and is essential to provide collaborative, proactive, and responsive service to the Campus regarding the HVAC systems that include thermal energy plants. Ensures systems are running at an optimal condition throughout the Campus and includes energy management savings analysis and collecting emission monitoring data for Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The position will coordinate complex projects and reports including major utilities planning, design and construction which requires significant contact with departments and outside organizations.

Experience and Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and five years related experience.
• Registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
• Must maintain active Professional Engineer license status and renew prior to expiration while in the role.

Job Duties

• Provides professional mechanical engineering consultation services relative to users’ needs such as programming, researching, planning, and designing.
• Advises administrators and department chairmen during development of project programs, schematics, preliminary designs, construction drawings and specifications.
• Prepares plans and specifications for remodeling and adapting existing campus buildings, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing modifications.
• Inspects construction sites at intervals to ensure progress and quality of work being performed and to determine if work is proceeding according to contract documents.
• Maintains effective working relationships between contractors and in-house staff.
• As necessary, serves as UT Southwestern Medical Center representative for specific projects.
• Responsible for design, execution, and effectiveness of system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, financial information is reliable, and applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures are complied with.
• May provide working supervision, training, and guidance to employees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed mostly in general office areas but may involve occasional to moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable elements and/or hazardous equipment when making site inspections.
